Prairie Dog Gun
« on: August 17, 2008, 07:18:35 PM »
Went out to my local dogtown today. Took a 223 a 22 rimfire, and my Ruger Blackhawk 357 6 inch. Killed several with the Blackhawk the farthest were 63 and 68 long steps.  No scope. I found out one thing though, if the sun is glareing on your sights forget about any fancy shooting.

I'm shooting a 125 gr win hp in a 38 special case loaded to about 1100fps. A nice easy shooting load that shoots pretty straight.

We have blacktail prairie dogs here that make lots of small towns sometimes in pretty brushy areas, so ranges can be short. It would be murder to kill them with a rifle. A lot of these towns never see a human except during antellope season.

Prairie dogs at 63 and 68 yards with an iron sighted revolver and a ramp front sight is nice shooting.

Beats the heck out of 100yd+ shooting in South Dakota on my wife's relative's ranch.  I did manage to hit a few with a 357 mag., scoped and sighted for 100 yds.  Unfortunately, it was take a shot and then wait 1/2hr for them to come up again.  With a contender pistol in 223 at 150yds or more; it was shoot until you were tired or ran out of ammo or rats.
