Eye Relief.....

I just received my Ultra Varmint in 223 a week or so ago and shot it and got it zeroed in at 100yards.  From when I was shooting well I could tell it was going to be well below MOA, but from lack of shooting recently and being in college 120 miles away, I don't get much range time.  There was one small issue I was wondering if any of you had a solution to though.  I mounted a 4x12x44 Bushnell Banner scope on it and love the scope except for the eye relief issue.  The stated relief for this scope is 3 inches, well I feel like i have to push my head forward past comfortable to see and the scope is as far back as it would go, the front ring is hitting the front part of the optic.  I was thinking about some scope rings that had an off set base but was unlucky in my search.  Any ideas will be much appreciated.  I would take a picture but as I said I'm at school and plus my receiver is half way to New York by now getting a 20 gauge slug barrel fitted to it.

If the rail is an H&R, move the front ring back one slot. If it's a Weaver #82 rail, cut another slot in it or get one of the other rails which are shown in the FAQs. Weaver makes offset rings, but I've never had to use them on any H&R.  ;)

And that AWFUL Wilk Chamberlin 14.5 inch length of pull don't help none neither!   >:(  For me, being built low to the ground for speed, grace and beauty,   8) a 13.25 inch length of pull is optimum.  I pulled the recoil pad off my 7x57 and fitted a butt plate and the length of pull is better, but I still have to do what Tim recommended to get comfortable eye relief with the 4x12x40 scope.

I'm probably not comprehending what everyone is saying, but if my eye was that close to the scope on the .45-70 it would be stuck there permanently.  I have a 3 - 9 x 40 Banner on my Ruger .308 and it comes up right there.  But, I have been poked by the Handi '06 leaning over the bench.  Usually, thankfully, my hat gets in the way.

Eye relief....I don't know a better place to post this, but I am dancing for joy tonight.  Just got back from the eye doctor a few minutes ago.  Could hardly see through scopes after 4 p.m.  I thought it was the return of an old malady.  A leak in the back of the retina, and I thought I would be vision impaired forever.  I was trying to learn to shoot left handed, figuring that was the only alternative.  Well Joy and Jubilation!!!  It's a cataract, it's coming off and I may not even need glasses.  Look out you Okie PDs and lots and sundry Michigan critters.....Ole Pete is going to see again!!!  I'm not going to waste a round on sighting in or anything tll after the surgery in a week or so.

Yeah Tim, I don't think I found his original post.  I still haven't figured it out and I stepped back, even had a glass of wine, let my eyes un-dilate after the doctor, and still am lost.  Sorry, But as my 96 year old mom says....."Getting old isn't for sissys".

I think I've got two topics scrambled together on this computer.  I haven't got a clue how.  It must have been me.  I was responding to .30-06 bullet groups and somehow wound up in eye relief.  Sorry for the confusion.  I"ll try to not let it happen again.   What'd ya say sonny?????

 catract removed now doesn't ware glasses any more except to read.
 I think I am going to have mine removed this fall.

Does your Ultra have the Choate stock?  Mine came with the Choate - and I seem to recall removing a spacer from between the stock & buttpad and that made the LOP much more comfortable..

How exactly do you tell the difference between the choate and the regular stock?  Mine has the laminated thumbhole stock and from what I remember choate only makes synthetic stocks, but if I'm wrong that would be fantastic to just be able to remove the spacer to avoid removing the scope.  Unfortunately it's halfway to NY to get another barrel fitted to it for slug season this fall so I won't get a look at it for another 4 weeks.

The lam t-hole stock is made by Boyd's, as you said, Choate makes all of the syn stocks, the Survivor and Varmint are t-hole also, but not the same style. As Slick said, the Choate Varmint stock is length adjustable by removing or adding the stacked shims at the butt. ;)

The Choate is synthetic and looks EXACTLY like the gun in the front->



PLEASE note that this Choate come from H&R black, and I have painted mine with the Krylon OD "fusion".  For the curious, the rifle to the back is a .308 Savage 10 FP in a Choate USS.  Both rifles have Burris FFII glass.  Either way, both stocks came with an additional spacer that can be removed to shorted LOP by 1/2 inch.  I mount my scopes LOW, so that's why the cheekpiece is missing and replaced with a 1/16ths thick sorbothane pad.

Very nice set ups you have there and thanks for all the information from both of you.  Well it looks like my only option is to either replace the scope mount with one that has more adjustments or to cut the stock....well looks like I'm gonna be taking my scope off dangit, then back to the range to re-sight it back in.  I guess it gives me something to do while the receiver is on the other side of the country.
