Larry,

Since I already have one.... 8). Rest assured I can take it for you and it will get there.

Maybe we can get a couple more donations and turn it into a complete rifle.

Tonight I got the barrel turned to fit in the bored out stub, next is threading the barrel and making the retaining nut for the breach.  There is tape on the break threads so I don't ding them up.  Larry

Here it is put together, just need the forearm lug and cleanup, sand blast and parkerize it.  ON the high pressure rounds I have been pinning the barrel as well as locking it in place with the nut at the breach.  Now to chamber it and put in an ejector, a trip to the range and it will be all set.  Larry

 8) Larry, I'm sure I'm not the only one out here who is amazed @ your skills, talents, & abilities!  It's a real pleasure to watch this project come together!

If it's not a trade secret, I would like to see a picture of the breech nut.

And how you install the forend lug.    :) Thanks for sharing !   ;D  Jim

The breach nut is just a round nut threaded 20 tpi that screws onto the threaded end of the barrel to hold it against a sholder at the front of the stub, the rear of the stub is recessed about a half inch in the diameter of the nut.  Most of the time I use a turned piece of the shotgun barrel to make the nut with.  Most of the barrels use a barrel band for the forearm stud to attach to.  On one project it worked out so that I turned the inside of the shotgun barrel with the stud attached to slide over the barrel and put a set screw through the forearm mount and locked it to the barrel that way.  This project may have enough barrel diameter to drill and tap a stud directly into the barrel.  Nothing secret here, I will tell you anything I know.  I fill the .002 gap between the stub and the barrel with JB weld as a bedding agent, this leaves the entire stub with no voids in it, so it probably gains a little strength from the stub part of the barrel also.  The pin is just an extra holding point, I drill it through the stub and barrel in front of the hinge point, you can see the end of the pin in the picture.  Larry

I got it chambered and the milling done tonight.  The picture makes the machine work look terriable, it is really fairly good, but pictures lie some times.  I have a 223 ejector ont he way for it, the pictures shows where the barrel, barrel nut and stub joints are.  Larry

The proper way to handle the delivery of the barrel is to ship it to Dan. He is the ONE PERSON we know beyond all doubt will be there since he is the host. As many cancellations even last minute ones as there have been especially the last couple of shoots that's the only way to be 100% sure the barrel is there to be given away.

That is perfect, that way it will be there for sure.  I am going to put a scope rail on it, and build a screw on muzzel thread protector incase someone wants to shoot it without the break on it, but things are moving along well.  I will put a few rounds down range with it and could even find a scope, I have a nice set of Burris Z rings in medium.  Larry

I finished up the thread protector for the FB prize barrel today.  Not everyone is a fan of Muzzel breaks, so I will include this target crowned thread protector for those of you that like shooting a rifle like it is supposed to be shot.  I am done now except for parkerizing it and putting a forearm stud on it, I have a scope rail I will put on also.  Things are going well, Spring will be here before we know it.  Larry

A real Machinest would just shred my work, the only reason I can make things look good and work is that I only have to make one at a time, so I can just work on it until it works right and looks good.  The real trick would be making two that are the same that look and work good and you can see that I have never been able to do that.  Larry

I put the forearm stud on tonight, it is threaded 5/16 18 into the barrel and then the standard 1/4 20 for the forearm screw, I machined a little flat onto the barrel for the coupling nut to snug up to.  It will look real nice once it is sand blasted and parkerized.  Larry

I got it finished today, test fired it and it ejected fine, (I installed a heavier ejector spring, plus it has a little emergency ejector cutout in the breach), shot it with the muzzel break on it, so shooting it with the thread protector only should be just fine also.  This is a picture, I am only waiting on a proper scope rail for it.  In the picture the break is installed, the thread protector is below it with the little spanner wrench to take them off and put them on.  If GB will PM me a proper mailing address for it to go I will put in in the post as soon as I bed and mount the scope rail to it. Some of the different steels I used took the parkerizing a little differently, but it does look good.   Larry
