Due to another kind member here I have a shotgun barrel for a donor stub. I made the first cuts tonight on the 17 barrel. I am working this one a little different, the 10-22 Cleark barrel has a notch cut in it near the breach end for mounting. I turned the barrel down until it was round and cut threads on the part just ahead of the chamber. These are to thread on a muzzel break on the smaller diameter part of the barrel so I can gain about an inch of usabel barrel length over the way I did the one that I have. I will leave it a full bull barrel and not taper it like I did mine, PD rifles need to be bull barrels any way. I will leave the chamber portion of the barrel attached while I am machining the breach end, then cut it off at the threads and crown the muzzel before attaching the muzzel break. I should have plenty of time to work this before I need to ship it off for next years shoot. Larry

You should have waited until a week before the shoot,because nearly a yr.is a long time to drool over it.Have a heart and remove this thread before Stimpy and the rest of the guy's see it. I don't think its good for there health to suffer that long.

To late Digger I already got the bib out and he's only cutting threads. The good thing is I got a year to figure out how to make my name jump out of the bucket . Let's see...anyone got any phone numbers for Witches, Wizards, Worlocks, Medicine Men, Shaman's, or any of the kid's that might be there to draw that I could pay off well in advance I'd contact Helen but she'd draw her own name ;DKurt

PS Maybe I should contact Norm in Kansas I bet he stopped to see the Wizard of OZ before he got drawn for the .204 last yr.

With the brake it will be about 20 1/2 inches or so with at least 18 1/2 of rifled barrel. The break is mostly to fill the turned down part where the cut was for mounting, but they do look cool and it will help disperse the hot gasses so it will be a lot easier to see hits with it. I will most likely angle the vents up and out to keep the muzzel rise down and not vent any out the bottom so as not to kick up dust if you are using it close to the ground. The barrel is straight .920 diameter and proper 4140 steel. I will post pictures of each step so others can clone it if it works out well. Larry

That seems kinda short for what is in effect a grossly over bore magnum round. Since it's that short you might want to look into the .17 Fireball aka .17 Mach IV. It uses the shorter .221 Fireball case and is much less over bore than the .17 Remington and should do better in the short tube.

Worked on the break a little today, made from a shot out rifle barrel, I bored it to .650 inside, I will put a threaded plug in the end with the exit hole in it, the other end is bored to thread onto the muzzel. Larry

Last pictures for the night. First is the threaded and crowned muzzel next to the threaded muzzel break. Number two are the barrel and break not screwed together, and last is the unfinished break installed on the barrel. It is slightly over sized, when I finish it off I will screw it on and then turn it to exactly match the barrel. Now I hear some cheap whisky calling my name. Larry

Now you've done it Larry,you've got the old Graybearded one drooling for it. According to his guide (for 1 morning) DJ said that his 17 Fireball was about the deadliest gun she had ever seen shot. I bet G.B. show's up again next yr.for the 5 th annual shoot.

The plan here it to build the ultimate PD Handi barrel. I have taken video througth a scope to see the biggest problem seeing the hit is the muzzel blast cloud not the recoil, so I am putting a break with the ports angled up and out to keep the blast out of the line of sight . This should also keep the muzzel rise down, along with the weight of the bull barrel and full diameter break. The light weight barrel I built with the same barrel "blank"as this one will shoot three touching at 100 yards, so I hope this one will do better. This is a 100 yard target from it. Larry

No actually if I were to happen to win it I'd donate it back to be given again. I do not believe in putting barrels on these rifles after the fact even if you guys do. I'd never knowingly own one that someone had fitted a barrel to after it left the factory. Besides as you know I'm not much of a handi owner anyway.

I do plan to attend the next shoot and in fact bring Mrs. GB with me but with my health nothing is ever etched in stone about such plans.

Didn't get much done tonight. I did build and thread the muzzel end plug for the break, I broke a bolt off on my steady rest, so I had to fix that. Tomorrow I will try to finish the break and start working on the barrel a little more. It is no wonder you can't make any money doing these things, they are a pain in the A$$. Larry

Got the business end of the muzzel break done tonight, threaded it in and crowned it, for lack of a better plan I put an 11 degree target crown on the break also. Yes, you do see some rifleing in the hole, I used a section fo 22 barrel for the plug. The chuck marks will go away, it is about .030 over sized so I can clean it up when I finish the barrel. Total length will be about 21 1/2 inches. Larry

I've been somewhat distracted by my Savage 24, but I went back to work on the PD barrel prize. Tonight I set up the mill and cut two slots in the break to vent the gasses out to the side and slightly up. I didn't want to go with standard holes around the whole thing so as not to kick up dirt and dust. Out and slightly up should get most of the hot gasses out of the line of view to see the hits while holding down whatever little muzzel rise you may get from the 17 FB. It also gets you a nice convient way to put a bar through the slot for removing the break for cleaning etc. When finished I will round off all the edges and sand blast it to match the barrel, the marks you see on the break were there for measurments and will be machined off when it is finished. I turned the break to nearly match the barrel tonight, about .001 to go, and I will finish that off with a file and then emery cloth. It is starting to look like a proper barrel now. Larry

You sure do nice work!! By the way, I noticed on your steady rest that you're using regular brass fingers. I got some of the ball bearing inserts for mine from Little Maching Shop......looks like this:

Watch that swarf doesn't jam one of the bearings. The brass fingers don't have this problem as they scrape the surface.

Nice looking steady rest. I have thought about using some nylon bar on mine, I don't have a problem with an unfinished barrel but trying to preserve the finish is tough when working on a Handi especially since the bores are so off center most of the time. When I chamber a barrel I put a dead center in the existing chamber or bore, turn the front of the chamber just in front of the lug round and concintric with the bore or chamber, then run the steady rest on that part while using the chamber reamer. Same thing when I cut the crown. The tolerances are non existant on these things, so you need to find a starting point and then work from there. Larry

If you can find it hard teflon works great for making bars for a steady rest. Use vegetable oil as a lube.

Markus was the kind person who donated the barrel to use as the donor stub for the PD project barrel. This is the beginning of a 32 H&R Mag barrel I am doing for him to help offset his cost. It is going into a 20 gauge stub, so the barrel is turned to .710 at the breach end which will allow me to clean up the chamber and have about an .080 sholder to pull the barrel up against when I tighten the breach nut up. I will make up a nut to fit in the rear part of the stub which I will bore to about.850 or so for the nut to fit into. Larry

I've been distracted a little, but I am back on track now, Spring will be here faster than anyone thinks, so I am back machining the door prize barrel. I picked the stub that had a lockup that left the release lever the furthest down on my frame, it is a lot better to take a little metal off the hinge pin than try to add it. Tonight I bored the stub to .800 and cut the breach end to accept the locking nut/sleeve, it is bored to .960 .400 deep, I will put up some more pictures when I am about to assemble it. Things are looking good, I hope there are a bunch of 17 FB's at the shoot this year. Guess I will have to figure out who to send it to to take to the party. Larry
