7mm-08

Do you gain alot in 7mm-08 when you go form a 20 to 22 to 24 inch barrel?
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

I would think it would be less than 200 fps. Dale

The book says about 30 fps per inch.  Mine is a 24" and does just fine.  Wouldn't mind if it was shorter.  I consider it a mid range rifle for deer size game.  No reason a long shot couldn't be made with it either.  Does a great job I might add.  Just for fun, I lined up two doe deer last year and made a double head/neck shot.  Legal to take two deer per day in NC and I do this from time to time when I am meat hunting.  Used an old copper Barnes bullet with great result.

I like the 7mm-08 because of its low recoil.  This aids me in making a very accurate shot.  I really do not like magnums at all.  Been through that and old enough now to know that it isn't worth the weight, expense, long barrels, blast, recoil, and accuracy problems.

I live on Hatteras Island on the Outer Banks.  No coyotes on the island but they are on the mainland as well as red wolves.  I hunt in Edgecombe and Halifax counties.

Best not shoot them red wolves. I think the fire down their probably got a few of them. I for one am glad they are back. However I'll go out of my way to kill a coyote.

Do you think red wolf pups would have been able to run with their mama away from the fire.  Fire probably started in late May.

You won't lose much.  The advantage of the 7-08 is a short action and lite wieght.  If you want a long range rifle get a long action cartridge.  A 20" 7-08 should be a fine deer cartridge to 300 yards.  It's advantage being a fast handling lite carry rifle in close quarters that can reach out to a reasonable range.

Do you gain a lot in 7mm-08 when you go form a 20 to 22 to 24 inch barrel?

There is a lot that plays into it but look to see 25 to 75fps going from 20" to 24" or 24" to 20", you will lose/gain  less with the heavy for caliber bullets compared to lighter bullets which are more effected.

From what I understand from my friends at Mackeys Ferry is that a lot of critters got trapped due to the nature of the fire. I guess the peat was burning below the surface.

Mine had a 24" barrel on it , Cut it back to 18" velocity went from 2900FPS to 2700FPS with 140gr bullets.
I guess that works out to 33FPS per inch.
