What will be your next gun?
« on: July 24, 2003, 11:28:56 AM »
Believe it or not, hunting season is really not that far away.  As such, I trust that many (or at least some) of us are getting ready.   For me, I recently bought a Winchester Classic Stainless in .375H&H, a Remington BDL SS in 7mm Ultra Mag, a Tikka Deluxe in 7mm Rem Mag, a Remington BDL SS in 300 Ultra Mag, and a few others that I can't recall at this time.  Since I have already purchased a bunch of rifles, I'm not going to buy another gun, but rather buy scopes for them and have some customized work on my rifles - like bedding jobs, trigger jobs, etc.

So, what will be your next gun?

I'm waiting for my next rifle. I want a Ruger MKII M77 International chambered for 7mm-08. They're not making them yet so I'll wait.  Dave

SHW,  I have a Sako 7mm in stainless/walnut.  Beautiful rifles.  You couldnt go wrong with it.  I would like to get another Tikka.  Probably in 223, or 7m-08.  But it wont be this year with getting my Sako and also a new 7m-08 barrel for my Encore.

If you read the Custom Rifle forum you probably already know mine but for those who don't here goes. Remington 700 ADL action and trigger (reworked), Douglas #4 barrel chambered to 35 Whelen Ackley Imp., everything squared and trued up, heavy recoil lug, in a Boyd's JRS Classic nutmeg laminate stock. This will be my first custom rifle.

Zachary, that's a good question one that I was gone to bring up in a new thread.  I purchased a Remington 700 30-06 with a 20" barrel on Gunbroker a paid 289.00 for it.  I want a project gun and I wanted a Remington 700 receiver.  This gun was manufactured in 1964 and is about 93%.

I was going to send it Pac-Nor for rebarrel and true up the action.  I was thinking about either keeping it a 30-06, but have a match 26" barrel put on or go to a 25-06 with a 26" match barrel.  What to you guys think, any suggestions.  I have the following and I don't want any mags.

2 270's
1 7mm-08
2 223's
1 308

My favorite is the 7mm-08.

I should post this for another topic.

Dbuck :  Since you have listed a 308 I would probably go with a 25-06 so as to fill in between the 223 and the 270 but you cant go wrong with the old workhorse the 30-06 good luck on the project and keep us informed. :D    JIM

dbuck,

Personally, I would go for the 7mm-08.  I have one in a BDL SS DM and it is an absolute joy to shoot.  In addition, it is very accurate and, believe it or not, pretty darn hard hittin - especially with Hornady light magnum loads.  I really love it.  If I could find a Tikka Deluxe in 7mm-08, then I would buy it in a heartbeat.

Thumbhole stocks
« Reply #17 on: July 29, 2003, 07:40:03 AM »
I put my 243 model 70  Winchester in a thumbhole stock from Boyds. So much better than the plastic stock it was in. Has a boss tuner on it, stainless. Very sharp looking gun now and no loss in accuracy. Boyd's makes the stocks for Howa.
I would like to have a high grade anshutzs in 22lr. Heck I'd settle for a middle of the road anshutz for around $700 or so.

Vmaxx,

Did you have the action glass bedding to the Boyd's stock?

Glass bedded ?
« Reply #19 on: July 29, 2003, 08:22:05 AM »
Just bedded the area around the recoil lug enough to float the barrel. This was the way it was set up in the polymer stock.

Beats the heck outta me. I guess whatever happens to follow me home. When I go to the gunstore sometimes I see something I just plain can't live without and it follows me home. Some times I find it somewhere else and it follows me home. I have several I've still not even fired and at least a couple I can think of right off hand I've not even scoped yet. Guess there ain't no real burning need rat now.  :-D

Probably go down to the local pawn shop, buy the cheapest axx Savage rifle they have, preferrably a beater. Take it home, make a project out of it, spend a few bucks tinkering with all the accessory stuff, ie; stock, trigger, barrel, scope, misc replacements parts. Make an insanely accurate rifle in some obscure 6mm chambering that cosmetically may not be a show piece but will shoot with the best of them. Just one of those things I like to do........................

Nearly 3 years after this was posted first----I'm really kind of wanting a Ruger 77/22 in .22LR----blued/wood.

But summer is coming and I just bought a new Suzuki Bandit 1200 a week ago---so most of my time and money will be devoted to my second love---motorcycles----at least till it gets cold again.

Well my "next gun" is the one I got 2 weeks ago. In fact I never thought I would get one in this caliber but .. . . it is a Sako in 270.  Now I have Sako's in 270, 280 and 30-06 in the cabinate.  I think next will come the 7m-08 but it will have to be a year or so.

Not sure if it will be a "new" one, been a lot of those lately; but I do have on order a mcmillan stock for my 1961 model 70 fwt 30'06, which I will do a bedding job myself for the first time. I should really stay away from gun shops.
