I owned a CZ 550 American in .308 Winchester.  It was a trifle heavy because I have serious disc degeneration and I traded it for that reason for a Remington 700 .308 that was a little lighter.  The turkish walnut stock on that gun was flawless and had quite a lot of figure for a factory rifle.  Beyond the beauty of the rifle itself, it shot all out of proportion to its' price tag and the single set trigger was great!!!  Well, ever since I traded that rifle I've been "jonesin'" for another one so that will be the one I lay my money down for the next time around.  Except this time, I think I will go with the .30-06.  I've had so many .308's and God knows I love that round, that I just want a long action this time.

I have a lot of guns that still haven't had scopes mounted on them, so I was planning to doing that before I buy another gun.  However, I got this itch recently to buy another gun.  OH WELL. :D

I already have a CZ 452 American in .17HMR, but I really wanted one in a regular true time and tested .22LR. Yup, going back to the simplest of things.  I just ordered it yesterday from Whittakerguns for $306, which is one heck of a price.  I had one dealer in Ft. Lauderdale try and rip me off - Guns and Knives.  First they told me over the phone that it was $284.  So I drove about 60 miles only for them to tell me that they made a mistake, and that their cost was $295 and that they would sell it to me for $430!  WHAT?!?!  Were they crazy?  I though they were talking about the newer 453 model (which is about $120 more).  Nope, they wanted to make a huge profit.  They said that they have to pay rent.  Well, if you  make a mistake, that causes me to drive 60 miles ONE WAY, thus 120 miles round trip, YOU  BETTER EAT YOUR MISTAKE.  Then they told me that they would be reasonable and sell it to me for $50 over their cost.  What?  They want to make a $50 PROFIT on THEIR mistake?  You call that reasonable?????  Bottom line, I walked out and bought the gun from whitterakers.  Even with shipping and FFL fees, the total price is still MUCH cheaper than what I had to pay at Guns and Knives.  I will NEVER...EVER....buy from them again.

My bolt guns top out a .300WM and or quite a while I have wanted a .338 or .375. The .338 Win Mag would have been acceptable but I've been holding out hoping Ruger would introduce a .375 something in their standard length (read 'less expensive') length rifle.  One of my wants was for a beltless case (for no particularly good reason except that unneeded belts offend my sense of propriety).

With the announcement of the new .375 Ruger, it seems the wait has paid off.  But maybe if I wait a bit longer they'll announce a .338 Ruger?

More waiting...

In the meantime I was handling an NEF single-shot .223 the other day - only $219 at Sprotsman's...  And who knows what will turn up at the gun shows...

I haven't heard of a .375 Ruger.  Hard to believe that it can outdo the H&H, at least in long term popularity.  Heck, the H&H has been around for what?....100 something years? :D

It’s a new cartridge designed, according to Ruger, to provide better than H&H performance from a 22” tube.  And to do it in a standard (.30-06 length) action.  The cartridge itself is a fat, non-belted cartridge.  Hornady is providing the loaded ammo.

The H&H has a 94 year head start in popularity, but that’s OK – I’d rather have the Ruger.  The RUM and H&H can’t be chambered in standard actions, while the Ruger is designed specifically for that purpose.  Not sure why Ruger didn’t just chamber the Dakota, nor am I sure what the differences are.  Rifles are supposed to be available in quantity in the first quarter of 2007.

My guess is that you will see other rifle manufacturers jumping on board and that you will see a number of offspring – a .338 seems logical as it should handily beat the Win Mag performance.

There are only so many people that can shoot 375 H H performance rifles.  The cost of a rifle, especially in the magnum chamberings are expensive.  The cost of ammo, new dies in a new caliber, etc. are expensive.  All the extra cost for a 1/2 inch reduction in bolt throw, I really don't think so.  So many new chamberings have been added.  The 7mm STW, the great long range cartridge is going down.  The Remington calibers are going the way of the 35 Whelen.  The Winchester calibers haven't dented the sale of the 7 mag, the 06 or the 270.  To be a successful cartridge, there has to be some worthwhile reason to invest over 1,000 dollars, plus pay higher cost for ammunition.  Shortening a bolt throw 1/2 in isn't enough.

Just got a Marlin Guide Gun in 45/70 a couple months ago. Now I'm looking at a Ruger M77 All Weather in 350 Rem Mag. Will be great for those rainy, nasty days. Hopefully, I'll be able to order it tomarrow.

Been looking at a few different rifles and can't seem to decide which one to get. The CZ-452 American  .17 HMR in the left hand model , or the Savage Model 40 Single shot right hand bolt action rifle in the .22 Hornet or the Henry Lever action in the .22 Magnum. Since I am a lefty, the Savage Model 40 right hand bolt action rifle would be the most difficult to use. But, it is a single shot rifle, so I don't think that would make much of a difference.  I do hunt in an area that is non centerfire rifle during the deer season. That means that there can be no centerfire rifles used until after December 20th. By that time, there could be 2 feet of snow on the ground.  Therefore, I am leaning towards either the .17 HMR or the .22 Magnum.  The .17 HMR shoots  flatter and farther , but the .22 Magnum hits harder and weighs more.

A 6.5x284 on a Rem 700 VLS, topped with a Leupold 6.5-20x50mm. It will use a Kreiger 1:8 barrel at 28"/ with a removable muzzle brake. Down side is 6 months + for delivery.

We’ll have to see what the rifles cost, but since these can be built on a ‘Standard’ Ruger action there is no reason for them to cost anywhere near $1,000.  The advantage of the shorter cartridge is not the shorter bolt throw but rather the cost reductions possible by building it on an action that is in much higher production the Ruger’s ‘Magnum’ actions.  The ‘Standard’ actions are also much lighter than the ‘Magnum’ actions.

I don’t think for a second that the .375 Ruger will make a dent in the sales of most popular cartridges in the .270 to .30-06 class, but it might very well make a dent in the sales of the various .375’s – in fact I expect it to do so for several reasons.  It wouldn’t surprise me if a .338 quickly follows, and I would expect it to have a good following as well.

I guess it's something we will have to see.  It does seem to me that a ruger rifle these days goes for over 600 and a good scope another 200 plus ammo or cases and dies.  (Especially large bore ammo.)  I still think that 1,000 is about right for a new rifle ready to shoot

It seems we do our accounting a bit differently, as when I consider the cost of a new rifle I do not consider the glass and ammo costs.  Often I will reuse a scope that I have laying around and ammo costs, well, they are what they are whether you reload or not, and the incremental cost over other ammo will probably not be that great.

But I’m OK with $1000 ready to shoot.  The alternative in a Ruger is the .375 H&H in Ruger’s  ‘Magnum’ action – list price for the rifle alone is $1,975.  (Ouch!)

I have one in .300 Win Mag.  It's been customized though: pillar and glass bedded, trigger job with pull at 3 lbs, answer products muzzle brake and recoil pad, and whatever else I now forget to remember.  It has a Nightforce NXS 5.5x-22x-56mm Illuminated scope (one HECK of a scope!) in Warne Maxima HD rings.

It's a SWEET rig.  Only problem is that it weighs about as much as a Carninval Cruise Line's anchor.

Zach, are you typing in my direction with that reply?

If so, excellent :) I'm sending mine to Kirby Allen and hes going to skim bed it and add a Shawn Carlock(Defensive Edge) muzzle brake. I've done many a trigger and usually leave mine at 3 lbs so I'll probably do that myself.

What made you get it pillar bedded? I was under the assumption that any stock that had the alluminum bedding blocks didnt need pillar bedding.

If you werent typing at me, ignore that question.
