I am looking for a semi auto rifle in .30-06 or .270 and the only hard requirements are close to 1 inch accuracy at 100 yards and a removable magazine. I would like to have a removable scope mount that does not lose zero, but that is a would like.

Any recommendations? I dont care when the rifle was made.

I think your requirements are a little too ambitious for a semi mostly on the accuracy expectation. If you're willing to settle for a pump, which by the way I feel is a better mousetrap anyhow, you can meet all those criteria with ease. All but the most worn out Remmy 7600 should have no problem with getting near or sub MOA accuracy with a little load development.

An EGW picitinny base on a 7600 would come as close to this as you can realistically expect. But it's my experiance that ONLY ruger rings truly allow for a detachable mount that'll actually hold zero Anything else and you should expect to have to sight in every time you remove. My advice would be to buy a quality lower magnification scope mount it with a deadnutz mount and forget the sights exist

Browning BAR is best for you. I don't have a Browning but my brother have one in .270 and it shoot under 1 inch group at 100 yards. I grew up with Remington semi auto (model 7400) Its not accurate gun but good enough for woods hunting. You want good removeable mounts, I'd recommend a Leupold base and rings.

I second the recommendation of a BAR. You will not be disappointed by the accuracy. They give flawless functioning. I have a Lightweight Stalker in .300 Win Mag. It is everything I want in a semi-auto. You will pay a little more for a BAR, but it is well worth it.

BAR is my vote as well although I got a Rem 742 that shoots very well with certain loads and is gawdawful with others

I own a Remington 7400 Synthetic Carbine. It is a 2 MOA firearm. I use it for local deer hunting. I bought it because it was very inexpensive (less than their cost) at a store that was going out of business. It is also a .30-06 and I use it with 220 grain loads for hunting in heavy brush here in MN where the bullet sectional density is everything. I do not feel it is a durable enough firearm to go on a wilderness hunt, for which I use my bolt action rifles with scopes and BUIS. If I wanted a semi auto for wilderness hunting I would get the Browning. It is a more durable firearm, even being the basis for some custom sniper rifles (Arms Tech). It is apparently quite accurate, as there are numerous reports of very good accuracy by many shooters on various internet sites. IMO, a 1MOA consistency in a hunting firearm is quite a tall order, one usually involving some bedding work and luck. In a semi-auto I suspect there is quite some luck involved. However, the Browning sure seems to be the one to give you the best shot at this luck (I had to do that).

Here is my list of top 3 not in any order.

Heckler and Koch SLB2000 (30-06 only) 2, 5 and 10 round magazine. Very European styled.

Browning BAR (Belgium) in 30-06 or 270

Valmet Hunter 30-06, the prices on these are outrageous likely putting this out of my price range.

I saw both the Browning and SLB2000 at Cabelas today. Tough choice.

The HK SLB2000 was very expensive here in MN. I handled one several years ago and was duly impressed. I liked the BUIS. The HK SLB2000 was also an order item here, and the limited jobbers carrying it kept its cost up. I have never even read an account of how well the HK SL2000 shoots. From pictures on the internet it appears to be based on the Browning gas system. If the European stock is usable for you, and the additional cost is permissible, the SLB2000 may be an excellent contendor. As the rifle was discontinued, service and parts could be an issue.

I like the way the Sauer 303 looks, no idea how it shoots. I'm sure it's ridiculously expensive.

Browning makes a smoother functioning action for certain. Accuracy varies from rifle to rifle so it's hard to say that one make is always better than another. You have to hope you get a shooter, or reload your own ammo. Someone mentioned in an earlier post and I agree. You can beat the Rem. 760 or 7600 pump rifle for dependability and good accuracy at a reasonable price. I've had both over the years. Started with the 760 pump, moved away to semi-auto's, and now I'm back to the pump rifle.

After looking at this long and hard. It cam down to the Browing BAR and the HK SLB2000.

I ended up with the HK SLB2000. It came down to price and features, also I got a sweet heart deal on the HK.

My next semi auto rifle will be the Ohio ordnance SLR (semi auto BAR). 3006, very accurate, and just plain cool. It fits your original requirements - 30/06, removable magazine, moa accuracy.......

My brother in law bought one. Sounds cool, looks cool, cool to shoot the first time, very heavy, not that accurate 3-4" groups, expensive to shoot, expensive to buy, boring to shoot after a few times. MIKE.

FN is coming out with a new rifle called the FNAR. This is essentially a tricked out BAR in 308 Win caliber only. It has a removeable magazine (10 or 20 rounds), pistol grip stock, picatinny rails galore, and an accuracy guarantee.

You posted a picture. Is this the new FN semi-auto? The only pictures I have seen of the new FN rifle show a long pistol grip hanging down (which I hate). But your pic shows a very nice wood stock and normal butt stock. What particular make and model is shown in your picture?

I saw the Merkel and believe it is the same as the Benelli R1.

I just found another forum that talks about it and they say the Merkel is the same action as the SLB.

Doug, eyeballing them, an R1 Benelli uses an action similar to their shotguns... it's not real similar to the Merkel (or HK).

I checked with my contacts at HK/Merkel and your correct the Merkel is made in Germany by Merkel.

I use a Bar carbine with wood stock. It shoots great. I would like to try a Short trac but I can"t find anyone who has used one.

I think you would be hard pressed to beat the Remmy 750 Woodsmaster. The design has been around along time and has excellant balance. Fit and finish is very good and it is accurate(1-1/2 MOA) with factorory ammo. great out to 300 yards for deer and good in the bush too. Price is reasonable.

Had one of the first one's that came out. Remington sent me on a wild goose chase to some repair center. (100 miles away)Then sent it to the factory twice. It had all kinds of problems, broken forend, out of round chamber,etc. but it sure looked nice mater of fact I just looked at one a few hours ago and it's not easy to walk away from one. But I've never had one that would shoot worth a hoot.
