That looks like fun. I am getting one of those in  a few weeks myself. Let us know tomorrow how many muscles that you forgot, or never knew you had are hurting.  ;D

It's real easy paddling, no sore muscles after the ~2 mile trip we did today up the lake and then upstream in the creek that feeds the lake and back, a little internet research and anyone can paddle like a pro.:D The hardest part is getting in and out, they're unstable until you have your butt planted in the seat, but there are techniques that make it easy, specially if you can ground the boat at the shore line, when you step in, it rests on the bottom and it's easy, just scoot yourself and the boat into deeper water. Works the same getting out, only use the paddle across the back of the boat and extended to the beach to keep it from tipping.

I have an SS 30-06, but I doubt it will ever spend any time in the boat unless I can find a place to hunt that is limited to boat access only, used to have a place like that, but it's too civilized there now. I got the angler model with an anchor system and rod mount so it will spend some time fishing, already have a trip planned to Lake Merrill, a flyfishing only lake, the wife's is the same model in yellow, both Old Town Dirigo 120s.

No rolling over Shaner, I have a half skirt ordered for it, but if I roll it over, I'm getting out of it!! No white water for me, just recreational touring with some fishing thrown in occasionally. It has a large cockpit that makes getting out of it real easy in an emergency, one of the nice things about this type of boat, it also tracks very well, yet is very maneuverable.

Glad you got into a kayak, my lifelong favorite boat.

Last year I build a kayak from a kit by Pygmy Boats. It is a 17-6" Coho model.

Weight 38lbs. Top picture is the yet to be finished boat the bottom picture is
ready to go on expedition. This boat is simply a dream to paddle. No $3.75
per gal gas required. Easy for one man to load and unload from a car roof top.

Mrs Canon 6 here.....I am very disappointed in both of you.....no invitiation from anyone to go kayaking :( whimper, whimper, whine and moan.

Actually, I'm just jealous.  All are very good looking boats, expecially the woody.

Fred M., you did a very good job building that boat.  It is absolutely beautiful.

Hope that you all have a great deal of fun out getting exercise and fresh air in the peace and quite.  Think of me once in awhile.

Very good, Tim.  Thanks for the report.  It looks like a great time.  I can imagine paddling to a secluded location, having a nice picnic lunch with the Mrs., while enjoying a bit of nature.    And ... receiving a bit of a cardiovascular work out as well.

Congratulations and enjoy!   ;)

Joe

Fred: You did a wonderful job with yours.  That boat is beautiful.

I'm jealous...  :)

Nice new toys, Tim.

I want an open top/sit on top version for floating down the Clarion River near me.   ..fish and camp out along the way.

I just haven't figured out how to get my truck from the launching point to the landing point though. lol

Fred, that's a really nice boat you built, a lot of pride, craftsmanship and time went into it and it shows. ;)

Cheri, Montana isn't all that far from here, pick a spot!! ;D

If anyone is interested in kayaking/canoeing, the site below is chock full of good info, if you read the OTC Digiro 120 consumer reviews, you'll see why I picked it.

I just haven't figured out how to get my truck from the launching point to the landing point though. lol

That just takes a little planning, we use two vehicles for the driftboat or the cataraft since I don't boat alone very often, leave a vehicle at the take out, then launch upstream and do a little running back and forth to get the tow rig downstream. Some businesses on the river offer shuttle service, you leave a key and a fee with them, they move the vehicle down stream to the take out while you're on the water. If you're solo, you can leave a bike or small motor scooter at the take out to get back up to the tow vehicle.

thanks everyone,

Tim

Looks like fun and nice country. I've always liked rivers and spent a lot of time in canoes. Below is a pic of a couple that I built. I use one of these for bow fishing and also spinning and fly fishing. Later this summer a buddy and myself plan on about a 10 mile juant down one of our local rivers. We're gonna throw in the rifles and try some coyote calling along the way. I hope we get around to doing that trip. Anyhow keep the topside up :) Dave

Here is my slide show of the construction of the the "Libella" the name of the boat. Latin for dragon fly, the fast aquatic insect. Coho is the model name.

The inception of the kayak has a great story, since I met the designer John Lockwood in the NWT when he tested the the Coho on Great Slave Lake. I tried to keep up with him in a single Klepper folding kayak, what a let down.
That was when I decided I had to have a Coho. That was 12 years ago I think.

The pictures are not in the proper sequence, because of some trouble with the program. The red bottom Zebron coating is a very tough abrasion protection. My own touch, not supplied with the kit

Matt,

It's the BiMart trailer that has the hinged bed, but I mounted it solid. I have two of em, the other one has a utility bed on it, has made many hunting trips with us since I bought it in 1982. I bought this one in '02 to haul my cataraft, now it serves double duty, in fact I even moved my MIL's furniture on it too!! ;D

Nam70.
Dave and All.
Thanks for the compliments. Yes it turned out well and performs beyond all
my expectations. With a project like that you never know how it is going to handle and  fits you. For a long time before I build this kayak my knees were prety well disabled to enter a kayak. Now with my new knees that is pretty well histiory. No trouble to get in and out.

I build quite a few kayaks before all made from FG carbon fiber s- glass etc.
made to be used in white water. My age has put a stop to this kind of kayaking
becouse of slower reaction time.  I had a single Klepper folding kayak before this one. The Klepper was slow and heavy and an absolute terrible boat going down wind. Trying to keep it on track was almost impossible in a big blow and very tiring.

Since this is a Handi forum I better quit writing about kayaks. But thanks for the intrest. Fred

I think that the "pucker-factor" would require an ejector to get me out of the boat after that one!
