corbanzo, don't let the ethics thing drive ya up a wall. Some of the things I've seen in the past have almost made me quit hunting. Had some AZZ (never found out who) that killed deer in the holler I lived in and took only the hearts! Like NONYA implies ,do what ya gotta do to put the game down quick. If you mess up some meat,so be it. Just do what makes you feel good about how you hunt and hopefully you'll set an example for the less experienced hunters you come in contact with. Tell ya ,we better be enjoyin the hunt while we can cause I' m afraid we've seen the best of times!

I realize a looooooong time ago people are gonna do what they wanna do, I won't let it bother me too much, but it doesn't hurt to maybe plant a seed or two.  And what other hunters do is PLENTY of my business.   We are a community, and not that big of one anymore, if you hadn't noticed.

And NONYA, if you wanna blow your deer in half to get it down, be my guest.  I respect you that much more.  ::)

I found out a long time ago that the old saying"actions speak louder than words"applies in a no small way to hunting. Hunters as a whole are a solitary bunch that don't want formalities infringing on their free time. I belong to a club that has over 2500 members that lease 67,000+ acres. Although most belong for the miles of trails to ride wheelers on rather than to hunt, everybody has a vested interest in club matters. At our quarterly meetings we never have more than 50 people and alot of times less. Most just want to get out and do it! It seems that no matter how well meaning we are with our words  about hunting, there are going to be those that misinterpet/resent our intentions. Sow your seeds by your actions. You'll still turn off some people and some won't want to hunt with you anymore. That's their problem, not yours. Believe me,after living in a rural low populated area for 30+ yrs, your hunting ethics can  sow lots of seed.
Have I noticed our hunting community shrinking? The impact of the reduced interest in hunting, for what ever reasons,on our area has went from booming in the 70's to not even being able to tell it's hunting season now!
They say you never really know someone until you've hunted with'em or went camping with'em but it seems you and NONYA have alot in common.

My elk went down from a 40 yrd. shot. I used a .375 H&H and a 270g. Barnes TSX. I had very min. meat loss. To answer your question, I have no min. distance.

When I hunt I take two rifles.  One for distance and one for close in.  Close on I choose a 308.  For shots 300-400 yards I prefer my 280.  Because I hand load I can get near 7 mag performance.
As a boy I tracked a deer for hours that my brother-in law pin holed at 75 yards.  I would atribute that to poor bullet performance or choice of bullets, not the 7 mag.
