35 whelen at the range

Shot the whelen today for the first time.  I got this barrel & reciever from  scibear a month ago. put a camo lam t-hole stock on it.
 Real nice feeling gun. Burris 3x9 sitting on top. Shooting rem corelocts 200 grain. Got on paper at 50yrds. Adjusted scope . bullets didnt follow. adjusted again,closer to 10 ring  2 rds about 3 inches apart. Not worried. This barrels new , may take a few fouling shots.
adjusted again. Bullets went the other way. At tis point my brothers laughing at me. My 7th 0r 8th shot just felt funny. Like a hang fire
 Looked over the gun. My hammer was hitting my scope . When I mounted the scope I had 1/4 inch clearance, at least. I was using old steel weaver rings. My scope was sliding forward with every shot. I loosened up the rings,readjusted the scope . Then shot again.  It would give me 3/4 inch groups. Then POI would change, 4-5 inches away. Checked the scope . Same thing. I made sure screws were tight. they were. But aparently not tight enough.  So Im gonna be changing rings tonight. Good news The gun was doing some descent groups & no misfires. . Not the best day at the range Ive ever had. But better than being at work. OH yeah recoil stiff but managible with the t-hole stock    Jay

Oh yeah..... ;D...stuff like that...... ::)....never happens to me. Why....when I mount a scope..... :-\ a few shots at the range....and, um.....4" groups at 300 yards! :o :o :o  Yeah....happens all the time....never a problem. I've had (have?) loose screws....just not always on the scope.  ;)

I had trouble with my 35 whelen like that its a pounder compared to say a 270win.
I had to locktight everything to get it to hold .

I have had problems like you were describing. On several
of my rifles I noticed the cross hairs on the scope weren't
straight up and down and my groups were opening up. I
got a scope ring lapping kit and lapped all of my rings and
it made a world of difference. When I started lapping I
found that the inside diameters of most of my rings were
out of round and the two rings weren't in line with each
other. I haven't had any problems since.

Have never had problems with my Whelens since recoil is moderate.  But have had problems with the .350s.  After making sure the rings were straight and in alignment, I have taken a thin sheet of Wet Dry sand paper, the finest and thinnest I could find, cut four pieces to fit inside each ring half.  Placed them grit side to the ring, then tightened everything back down.  No more movement ever.  Those .350 are the hardest kickers I have ever shot.

  good to hear that you got it to the range. stiff recoil, come on that .35 is a cream puff, lol ..

sm bob. Thats what was happening to me. After 2 shots my crosshairs were crooked. The scope was twisting & sliding forward. scibaer
 Im gonna have to put on a few LBs cause to me that recoil is stiff  ;D

Na, creampuff  i'm telling ya ..
do you find it more or less recoil then the 45-70 ?
 ya want some recoil, load up a 350 gr. bullet and shoot it standing ;D
then you may feel 'some' recoil ..

Suggestion.....if you don't already have one on, buy a Limbsaver recoil pad and install it. Best $35 you will ever spend. I put one on my Stevens 200 .308 (the Stevens comes with a plastic light weight stock and a "brick" for a recoil pad) and now I can shoot it all day and not have a bruised or sore shoulder. The ProHunter comes with one standard and they are nice for the hard kickers.

Dave,
+1 on that Limbsaver or a Pachmayer Decelerator. The recoil pad that comes
with the Handi's is a p.o.s. A good quality pad will make a hard recoiling rifle
a real pleasure to shoot.

This is a Boyds thumbhole. Its got a real good pad on it. I just put the scope in some leupold rifleman rings & tightened them up real tight. May get out next week & sight her in.

I bought some Burris rings a while back and they came with four pieces of double sided tape to install in the upper and lower ring sections.  You might try that with the Weaver rings.

Burris friction paper is just like an address label, not double stick tho, only is installed in the bottom ring. Using address labels is in the FAQs as one of the methods of mounting scopes in rings to help prevent rings marks, kind of a poor man's alternative to lapping which is also covered in the FAQs. ;)
