Scope use with a non Monte Carlo stock?
« on: January 11, 2008, 12:22:36 PM »
Members - Can anybody comment on using a scoped barrel on a Handi with normal (non Monte Carlo) stock? Do you find the cheek position to be too low?  Especially with high scope rings?  Any comments appreciated.  Thanks in advance.
Thanks, Dad, for taking me into the great outdoors.

It can depend on several factors.

For one is the shape of your face.

That sounds funny, but it's true in that some people have longer faces and some have round, and the distance between can vary when it comes to your cheek weld on the stock.

I have a longer face than my brother, and we discovered this setting up our bows because the nocking points, and the string peep sights were off by about a 1/2" between the two of us, but my neighbor had no problem using my settings.

Same with gunstocks, and also the height in which you mount the scope.

On the handi, you have to mount the scope to clear the hammer, and that may require a taller scope ring set.

Whereas you could mount the scope forward in a scout mount configuration, and be able to mount it as low as possible to the barrel.

It's all about if it fits, then you can get away with it, and if not you may need the monte carlo.
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I've got a scope on a handi with a non Monte Carlo stock. Using medium rings and I think I could have used low. Its just a question of whether your scope will clear the hammer and/or the rear sight.
I can shoot it ok but I am tempted to invest in a new stock. I think its $35 from the H&R website.
I find it works fine shooting from the bench but I don't get a good solid cheek weld when shooting offhand.

All my Toppers and Tracker II's are regular stock and are all scoped. Not a bit of problem even with the high rings we used. Would I like to bring the scope height down ? Yes, but with the hammer profile it isn't going to happen.
