What rifles are you hunting with this year
« on: September 19, 2007, 08:41:30 AM »

I'm just curious...as to what rifles & loads are you using this year...and what type of terrain are you hunting in..

Mine choices are..

My 25-06 Ultra for any open field shots using either factory or hand loaded 115gr. CT silver BT's..and my CVA 45-70 using either the Nosler 300 grain or Barnes 300 grain TSX bullets for any heavy wooded terrain..All will be used on Missouri Whitetails...

What are you using..

I haven't decided yet, dunno if I'm even gonna get to go for sure, my huntin buddy has surgery scheduled mid October, so he's gonna be out of commission for a while, my son doesn't know for sure yet either, may get to hunt late buck in November, but don't know yet. If Don (Bang_Ow) can break away from work, that may be the only time I can hunt, won't hunt alone any more, use to when I was young and fearless!!! 8)  For late buck, I'll be hunting the west side, that means close shots for the most part unless I get a chance in a clearcut, 25-06 or .280Imp may be along with me then, thinking about the 35 Remington Handi or the 30-30 Handi, but I may just put all the potential picks in a hat and draw one!!! ;D

mac, I'll be using a 17hmr and a 22 mag ultra hunter for tree rats, crow's, yotes and other assorted varmits. for white tail i'll use a ultra varmit fluted in 243 win. one of my old neighbors has bought a piece of land that is not to far away and i know this guy will help get a deer out of the woods.i'm just a little disabled with spine problems, arthritis, and congestive heart failure. i haven't hunted much in a few years and i am looking forward to getting out a little bit!! good luck with your hunts and  have fun shooting!!

For Oklahoma whitetails I will be using my 38-55 Target Model or that frame and stock with a 44 mag or 500 S&W.  The older I get the less speed i need to kill the big ones.   I might pull out the 7.62x39 barrel for the late doe season.

I took my 30-06 Handi on two scouting trips so far this year.  Taking it with me this evening when I float the Chena, calling.  Looking for a Bear, cayote, or anything that answers the calls.  Later after snow flies I will take my Sportster in .17HMR, and my Ultra in .223.

7mm-08 Handi in synthetics and 3-9x40 for deer if it is back in time.
I hunt in northern Oklahoma and usually have a Field in front of me and woods behind.
My backup rifle is the old marlin 30-30 with 4x32. Then I'll probably go deeper in the woods.

my son will use his heavy-barreled electroless nickle h&r .308 for bama whitetails. rifles wears a bushnell 3x9x40.
i will use a bargain basement winchester 670a pushfeed in .30-'06 i picked up for $200 because of a cracked stock. stock was easily repaired, re-finished with flip-flop buttpad and bedded. shoots into a nickle with handloads, into an inch with silver box winnie 150-grain factory loads. the winnie wears an old japan-made bushnell banner fixed 4x with elevation turret that cost $20.
gotta love bargain deer whackers. ::)

If i dont get a buck in early bow season im taking either the ultra 25-06, vanguard 270 wsm, or m77 7mm mag, just not sure yet, If i kill a buck with the bow im 100% for sure taking the 223 ultra varmint doe hunting. I usually only use my savage 17hmr for night fox hunting, but if im able to get a lower power scope for the handi hornet i will probally be carrying it some.

When I'm hunting in and around the thick stuff I don't want to track a deer in, my 45/70 with 300gr Remys at a tad over 2000fps really knocks em flat.
When hunting the fields I'm gonna try that 25-06 you sold me with factory Winny 120's.

I'll have the 357 Maxi and the 500 will be out with me for sure.

I have a couple new ones to try if I get a chance as well...30-30,308 and 280......time will tell. ::)

12ga. Ultra Slug Hunter Deluxe with Remington Copper Solids for shots up to 150yds and Remington Core-Lokt for longer shots that I actually think I can make.  I hunt in a natural blind over a 20 acre field.

Okay, so technically it's not a centerfire rifle, but it is a centerfire cartridge and it is a fully rifled barrel... :)

I usually use the Stevens 200 in .308, 150gr. CLSP but after last week's range session the Marlin 1895 45/70 has moved to first place.  300 gr. Rem HP 50 gr. Re#7.  The #3 gun is my Deerfield .44 mag 240 SP.   My fourth choice, if it gets back from the gunsmith is my 1894 44 mag, 300 gr. Hornady XTP or the 45/70 Handi, 300 gr. Laser cast.  My wife Sue will be shooting her beloved 1894C 158-gr. SP.

Going to use my 7mm08 and my 357max my handgunning will be with my contender in 44mag and 357 max. Still would like to use a spear. Hey Tim how do you keep up with all them rifles? Do you sometimes forget some of them like with calibers you have?

No big game handi's in the inventory right now, so I am itching to go for coyotes, the 204 is tried and true but I want to see if the k-hornet conversion will performs as expected, I might have to finally relinquish it to the boys.

As for the big stuff

Ruger 77 338 wm  for moose on the eastern slopes of the Rockies, Mountains and heavy timber
Stevens 200 270 win  for deer Mulies and Whitetails Eastern Alberta bald a$$ prairie
Knight American 50cal for whitetails Northern Saskatchewan (annual Canadian thanksgiving trip to the in-laws) big woods they start in BC and end in Quebec

The second mouse gets the cheese

My son will be using his 30-30 handi & I will probably try out the 444 marlin handi (first production with slow twist) 265 hornady hand loads at 2350 fps or the 45-70. We hunt public here in OKlahoma so I try to take my son out of school for a day or 2 during the week to try and avoid the people & have a safer trip (not saying its not safe) . Last year when the sun came up one SAt morning it looked like every tree was glowing orange. Decided to pack up & try later in the week, there were not so many hunters out & was better for the boy & myself to be alone.

May have to try the youth model 7 in 7-08 as well either my son or myself

we will both be using 50 cal huntsman during black powder season
That's my boy, GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

I'll probably be using my marlin 30-30. I will be hunting in wooded areas in TN.

45-70 with Hornady 350 gr. bullet on top of 50 gr of IMR 4064 (sh-sh-sh a Marlin XLR with a Bushy 3200 scope).
