I still use my win. 94 30-30 which my dad gave me 50 years ago-it's just as deadly as 50 years ago; If, I'm not in heavy woods I use a rem 700 in 7-08.

I was going to use my .243 Handi, but it looks like I'll be using my 7MM-08 Handi I picked up recently.

Just need to get to the range now to sight it in!

I've had to tone down my hunting rifle, because of a bad shoulder, and hunting in South Texas where a deer runs just a short distance into the brush isn't a desirable situation.

Everything that a deer will run into, (and that could be just a few feet from where it stood) has either thorns or fangs, so dead right there (DRT) is what you want from a hunting rifle!

The 7MM-08 should do the trick!
My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

jimbo i hate to tell you this but all the deer i've killed with the 7mm-08 have ran , now all i used was cheap corlokts and the farthest deer ran 40 yards and they were northern deer but still they ran. now with the small deer we have down here and if you had a load with a sst or a nosler BT i'll bet they'll drop on the spot but say good bye with what little meat a texas deer has

M77 25-06 120 gr grandslams for reaching out and touching.

45 colt carbine 250gr soft cast boolits over 36 gr HB for up close and personal.

X-force 366gr goltip at 336fps for early season (accounted for a 5' 6" black bear already)

My old colt souer 300 wheatherby for that late season cow elk draw.

Now to work in the other babies somehow???

I try to put in on the shoulder in order to make contact with bone.

They will drop on the spot or just one jump and down, but usually fold up like a dove hit with a full load of shot.

I've had deer run off with my 7 mag, also but I took a lung shot in order not to ruin any meat.

I wasn't hunting in the thorny brush of south Texas though so I could afford to let them run a ways.

The .243 will drop them also if you place the shot right and use the right bullet, but I have a little more confidence in that 40 more grains of bullet the 7-08 offers!

Hey Jimbo, I would highly recommend the Federal Fusion 140 gr for the 7-08. I use the Fusion 95gr in my Handi 243 with outstanding results. I think you will be greatly satisfied.

I will do that for sure!

I tried them in my .243 after reading your recommendations on other threads, and they did shoot the best out of my rifle.

I'm going to give them a try on my next range trip, maybe by the weekend.

I'll have to post my results when I do!

Thanks, and so many of you guys have been a great help!

Will use one or both of two rifles for elk: 30/06 Handi with 200 gr. Accubonds or 444P Marlin with 300 gr. Cast Performance WFNGC's.

Will use 30/30 Handi with 170 gr. Hornady FP's for deer.

Although remote, there is a chance of encountering a grizzly in the area I hunt elk. One was mistaken for a black bear and killed in the spring less than 15 miles from the spot where I last killed an elk. The Marlin may get the nod.

I plan on using my 30-30 Handi when I'm on stand  loaded with 170 gr. Core Lokt's .  If I'm pushing the thick stuff I plan on using my 12 gauge shorty with Remington Sluggers.  I finally decided to put the bolt action Ruger down and break in one of the NEF's.

Been awhile sense I been on... Hey fellas 8)
Anyway to put mine out there, I will be taking my M70 -270 and my 308.
I went out about a week ago and took my 270 just to plink and use up some practice loads I loaded. These are my regular deer loads with 130gr Core-Loks nothing fancy, but my M70 loves them.
Anyway I had a chance to head shot 2 ground hogs at 300yards with them.  I believe I shouldn't have too much trouble bagging some meat this season with her.
I would be taking out the -06 UltraComp, but with so much going on, I haven't had time to tune this one in. Extended project for next year I suppose ;D

For deer in the open spaces I will be using my Rem 700 in 270 or my Stevens in 30-06.    For close cover area I hope to use my Win 94 25-35 if I can get in a little more practice with it.   For coyotes it will be my H&R Ultra in 223.

When Im deer hunting, no matter what type of terrain Im in, i carry my .243 and my 35 whelen over my shoulder.. 100gr. in the .243 and 200gr. in the whelen. i always carry two guns afield, even squirrel hunting, a .22 and .410 or 20 gauge.. thats just how i do things

You remind me of a fellow I worked with almost 20 years ago. He was old then and carried two hammers. Never did figure out why. As far as what I am using this year for deer that would be the only rifle I have right now. That would be the Remington 700 SPS 243. Dale

.357 Magnum Handi. I haven't decided on a load yet. I'm going to order some Buffalo Bore ammo and see how it shoots.
