Her is some more info on the round from Andy I just wish I was testing it.
This is an addicting little cartridge. I have all but burned up the first box of ammo and have been getting some very good and consistent grouping. I have been shooting three shot groups because of the limited ammo supply but my last three shot 50M group was .23" with a fairly stiff tail wind. Once I seasoned the barrel a bit the groups hae stayed in the .25" to .4" range and all have been fired in a unrelenting wind. On the promise of some more ammo I pulled a bullet from a live round. This is a channelured, apparently true jacketed bullet that weighed 20.1 grains The powder was a spherical flake that filled the casing up to about the base of the bullet.(I spilled a bit removing the bullet so I didn't weigh it.) I am told that the powder is US made but the bullets are produced at Aguila's plant.
I have noticed that Brownells and others are selling "17 High Standard" equipment. I have verified that the Aguila chamber and the Hi Standard chamber are lightly different. Both will shoot the 17 Aguila cartridge safely but I'm betting on higher velocities from the Aguila chamber due to the lack of a .328"-long free-bore found in the HS version. My bolt-gun velocities were right at 1850 ft/sec.
Centurion Ordnance, Aguila's US importer/distributor is sticking by this month for deliverys to outfits like Natchez Shooter's Supply and others, and the cartridge is listed in their current catalogue. Should be a fine small game round. ~Andy
Here is his post on the 2 different chambers
It's a drawn out and complicated story but I'll condense it into one line, I hope. The 17 High Standard and the 17 Aguila CHAMBERS both fire the 17 Aguila CARTRIDGE. The dimensions of the actual chambers are different. The HS chamber is longer between the rim-face snd the shoulder than the 17 Aguila is. Also, the 17 High Standard has a .328" free-bore. I suspect this is to reduce pressures, or delay/retard blow-back in HS's lightly bolted semi auto pistols.
While High Standard is producing and marketing barrels in this chambering, the 17 High Standard, the only ammo that will be available is the "17 Aguila" ammunition I have been describing here. The cartridge has a 20 grain JHP at a listed velocity of 1850 ft per sec. I saw today that Brownells is offering HS barrels for the 10/22 for $259. This is about the price HS offered me 6 weeks ago.
Why the two different names? I don't know. Aguila (Centurion) says they have no idea why HS is calling the cartridge by their own label and will tell you flat out that the cartridge is the 17 AGUILA. All I can figure is that the actual chambers are different enough so that HS can claim proprietary chambering: meaning that they sell guns chambered for the 17 High Standard, but in which the 17 Aguila cartridge can be safely used. There's no confirming that but it's the only thing I can think of. Hope that helps. ~Andy
Me Im holding out till Some other unnamed barrel maker starts selling 10/17Aguila barrels that will drop into a 10/22LR.
