Rifle sights
« on: July 25, 2007, 05:54:23 AM »
My dream rifle(s) would be stainless steel, with Mauser claw extractor, scoped, synthetic or laminate stock,AND with iron sights as back up.  I want a 30.06 and a 375 HH, and maybe a .338 WM.  Who makes such an animal?  Also, if I bought Ruger's, can they or a good gunsmith install he iron sights, and at what price?  Back up plan would be to buy CZ's and have them parkerized.  Anyone able to help?

You may want to consider getting older rifles that are in very good condition. I have a Remy 700 with iron sites with see through scope mounts and a scope. Very nice looking rifle with a nice piece of wood (it's not for sale).
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

The New Ruger M77® Hawkeye Alaskan is chambered in the new .375 Ruger and is now available in a matte stainless finish with iron sights.

I've though about the Ruger Alaskan, but ammo availibility is questionable until it catches on and all the manufacturers start making it.  Within the next few years, I am planning an African trip, and an Alaskan trip.  I will probably take the African trip first because of potential political problems in Africa.  I've also thought about older rifles, but most are not stainless.  I do have an older Remington .300 WM.  I like the newer Ruger's with the 3 position safety, stainless, integral scope mounts.  I also heard that Winchester made a stainless model 70 with the Mauser action, but I have never seen one.  I did find a gunsmith who can install iron sights on a Ruger.  He wants to take a hard look at the barrel though, because he will have to drill and tap it out for the mounts, wants to make sure it is thick enough.  He said he could put Remington mounts on the Ruger.  $5 per hole to drill and tap.  I also like a laminate or synthetic stock for weather, as well as the stainless.  I could have a blue rife parkerized which would help if I can't find what I really want.

i've read somewhere in the last number of months that Ruger's stainless is so hard that some engravers won't even try to work with it anymore.     if that's true, then i'd have the front sight put on with a barrel band and maybe brazed on.     the rear sight is the only one i'd try to drill and tap.

BUT: i'd prefer to just buy a stainless rifle with the sights factory-installed.    that way they can guarantee the installation, etc. for whatever warranty period.

take care,

I can wrap this up for you real simple like:

REMINGTON MODEL 798

Most any competent gunsmith can drill for open sights....This is definitely on my wish list.

[I also heard that Winchester made a stainless model 70 with the Mauser action, but I have never seen one.]

Here's a Remington 700 Stainless/Synthetic .375 H&H w/sights.

If you can go stainless-less, I can vouch for the CZ, as I've had one in .375, and it's just about the best bang-for-your-buck (pun intended) around.
