I've though about the Ruger Alaskan, but ammo availibility is questionable until it catches on and all the manufacturers start making it. Within the next few years, I am planning an African trip, and an Alaskan trip. I will probably take the African trip first because of potential political problems in Africa. I've also thought about older rifles, but most are not stainless. I do have an older Remington .300 WM. I like the newer Ruger's with the 3 position safety, stainless, integral scope mounts. I also heard that Winchester made a stainless model 70 with the Mauser action, but I have never seen one. I did find a gunsmith who can install iron sights on a Ruger. He wants to take a hard look at the barrel though, because he will have to drill and tap it out for the mounts, wants to make sure it is thick enough. He said he could put Remington mounts on the Ruger. $5 per hole to drill and tap. I also like a laminate or synthetic stock for weather, as well as the stainless. I could have a blue rife parkerized which would help if I can't find what I really want.
