416 taylor questions?
« on: July 22, 2007, 05:42:09 PM »
Hi Folks,  I need some help.  I am presently purchasing a 416 Taylor and need any input on load data, what recoil to expect, reduced loads - general information and any resources you can share.  No big plans yet just always wanted some thing strong but light. I have shot 3-1/2" full house turkey loads for reference purposes.  Will want to develop reduced cast loads if possible for local use.     Thanks,   Bill   Any personal experiences, results or hunts you have used one on will be appreciated.  Any cautions are welcome as well.  Thanks again....

Use 458 Win Mag brass and Reloader 15 powder.  I have loads for 300gr X, 350gr TSX, 400 Partition, and 450gr Woodleigh. PM me if you want some suggestions. Great caliber that can hunt every animal in the world in a standard length action.  If you need factory ammo, then here is some that I have tried with great results:

You have picked a really good cartridge. Recoil is less every time you shoot it, so shoot cast 350's or 410's loaded down a little. My favorite jacketed bullet is the 350 Speer, holds together and penetrates well. The old Hornady 400 soft was a good bullet also, I've no experience with the new ones. My 410 gr. cast at 2200 fps does about all I need from this rifle. It is a comforting rifle to have in our grizzly infested hills. Most of them just woof and posture but some really have bad attitudes so...............
Mine weighes 9 pounds loaded and no scope of course. It will place two bullets next to each other every time I go to the range and see if the sights are still on. Most of it's shots are on rocks all over the desert and even rockchucks up high. The sights are by XS (rear) and NECG, which is a banded front with a sourdough brass face. Works very well and is on every time I pick up the rifle and never fogs. Yes, I am anti scope, remember all the old timers bragged how close they got when they made their shot.
Reloader 15, 4895, Varget, 4320 all work well. I would also sugest necking down 458 brass rather than necking up anything else. The 416 Taylor does make the 7mm and 300 mag useful, at least the brass can be necked up to 416.

Thanks Guys,  I am hoping to pick up the gun today. - It came in Fri. but we ran into some last minute paperwork issues between the seller and the local gun shop that hopefully they are ironing out.  I have purchased 458 brass, picked up some Reloader 15 along with mag. primers and have some IMR 3031 on hand, also picked up Hornady 400 RN interlocks and Barnes X triple shock in 350 gr.  I'm having a hard time finding the 350gr Speer mag tips I hear so much about or I would have started with them.  I also picked up a box of 300gr. Barnes X which I may regret if half the negative feed back is true - I know we'll see. Any other information will be more than appreciated as this is my first semi-wildcat and as always there is load development.   Thanks again,   Bill  -  I have not see one negative word about Reloader 15 so far.....sounds like a good powder in the 416 Taylor.  I'm glad you guys came along as I did not see anything for a while - Thanks Again

Excellent reloading info on "The 416 Taylor Page".

I built my Taylor on a Ruger LA and Midway 24" A&B barrel originally for a Savage 110.  It does 1" plus/minus a quarter inch for 3 shots when I do my part.  I also installed a brake which makes it much more pleasant to shoot.  Recoil is something near my 300 WM/200 gr or 338-06/225 gr with, and really grunt mean with a 400 gr without the brake...on the order of 45-50 ft/lb without and 25-30 with calculated by Recoil.exe. and depending on the bullet weight/velocity.

It weighs 10.5 lbs complete with scope and 4 rounds, additional lead shot/epoxy mix and foam added to the butt stock to bring the weight to the 10.5 lbs and handles like a dream.  My eyes are old and bad so I had to have the 1-4x Leupold to make it work.

Midway always seemed to have the 350 Speer in stock at least every time I needed to order.

The Speer 350 also works great for any North American game but I would go with a 400 gr Barnes for any of the large African deer family or nasty critters.  Everything from P-dogs to Elk hate to see it coming.

You picked an excellent shooter.

RL-15 and BLC-2 gave me the best accuracy and highest velocities with the 350 Speer.  (See data on the Taylor Page/other Taylor Owners Data/C.David)

Enjoy   ;D 8)

NFG    Thanks for replying - Things got worked out between FFL's,and I got it home and shot it a little bit.  It has a brake and the recoil is surprisingly mild even with heavier loads.  I think my buddy's 45-70 is going to be the bruiser of the bunch.  I do have to be conscious of COL with vz 24 action so I am not too sure how well those long 400 Barnes X will do in it, I could be wrong.  Right now I'm working with 400grRN on the large side and hoping to eventually find and try those 350gr Speers out.  If any one knows of lighter for caliber bullets that are more suitable for deer (please read some expansion and maybe a little more reach) I'm all "ears".  I don't want to change what it is - only to stretch it where it where it can be because it is so much fun to shoot.  I'll check out the Taylor site. For a rugged working gun with several Alaskan brownies to its credit it sure is pretty one.  Hello mild recoil therapy.      Thanks again,    Bill      Still all ears!  Please share freely.

I shoot the Barnes 300 gr X bullet in my Charles Daley 416 Taylor Mauser and it is easy to get to 2500 fps with RL15, shoots very accurately also...JimP. ;D
