CZ 52 in 9mm
« on: May 27, 2007, 10:50:48 AM »
I notice that AIM has CZ52 barrels in 9mm for sale. Does anybody have a CZ52 in 9mm already? If so, how well does it handle the 9mm rounds? Does it shoot to a different point of aim? Does it cause any adverse stress on the frame and slide?

Thanks for any information. It would be nice to be able to run cheap 9mm ammo through the CS, but these caliber conversions don't always turn out so well.

Steve:  I don't have any experience with the CZ52 in 9mm but I own a Tokarev in 7.62 with both a 9mm barrel and a 38 Super barrel.  Shooting 9mms through your CZ isn't gonna hurt anything.  The pistol was made for the 7.62x25mm cartridge - the 9mm in that pistol is a playtime afterthought.  The only problem you may encounter is with feeding the shorter round from the longer case magazine.  You may also notice the pistol may not cycle completely but you can fix that with a weaker recoil spring from Wolff Springs in Pa., if the need be.  Mikey.

Like anything else you have to watch what you get. There was an older batch of Fereal barrels what were out of spec (Wrong OD) and they would bind in the slide. I know that Makarov dot com is having a custom batch of barrels made. The 9mm shoot low.

My 1990's Czech CZ52 9mm barrel is RC47, while my 1950s Czech CZ52 barrels measure at RC25 to RC35.

What does it all mean?
My 9mm CZ52 barrel steel might yield at 220ksi, while my 7.62x25mm Tokarev CZ52 barrel steel might yield at 120 ksi

My shooting buddy and I bought the AIM barrels, and got in under the wire.  They sold out quickly!
These were barrels only, requiring switching the rollers, slide block and pin over to the new barrel.
He did his, but my pin punch wasn't up to the task - I need a better tool.  He is waiting on new rollers, block and pin to make two complete assemblies for easier swapping.  After a month, the parts still haven't arrived.  I'm waiting to see if his arrive before I order them.
As to shooting, the POI was close at 15 yards, watching him shoot.  It did stovepipe a couple times.  I have read of others needing to tweak the extractor a bit to work well with 9mm.
Overall, it seemed okay.
I have an 800 round case of 7.62 ammo, but do like the idea of being able to use a more easily available load I can get locally.

In my opinion, the 9mm conversion kind of castrates the CZ-52.  It's a unique, accurate, somewhat exotic, and very powerful weapon as is. If 9mm were WAY cheaper than 7.62X25 I could see an advantage, but it's not. That said, I have a 9mm barrel on it's way, and I'll let you all know how it does.
