My new truck!
« on: April 08, 2007, 12:54:30 PM »
2007 Dodge Ram 1500 SLT Quad Cab 4x4. It's pretty much loaded. Hemi, tow package, anti spin rear end with 3:92 gears, 20" wheels and tires!

Thanks guys. We could fit a few deer in the back of this one huh Rage!  ;)

The silver Durango behind my truck in the first pic is my wife's 2005 SLT. It also has the Hemi, is all wheel drive, tow package, pretty much loaded. It's probably the smoothest riding vehicle I've ever driven. It's also been the best vehicle I've driven in the snow so far...........we'll see how Big Red does next winter!  ;D

I've been thinking about a new truck with a Hemi.  Currently I have a 2002 with the 5.9 old 360,  it pulls like a tank at low rpms.  I never have to gun it to get over hills with my camper.  If I keep it below 2000rpms, the truck will just crawl up the hill and not loose any speed.  It is a very torqey motor.  The only thing I'm scared about the new Hemi is the rpm range.  Will I have to gun and keep the rpms aboue 4000 to get over the same hills?  I currently get around 13-14 mpg with the 360.  It has been a great motor.  The truck is payed for and I will probably keep it as a farm truck or a stand by for my 79 Dodge 4wd hunting vehicle. Another question is can you get 17" rims with the 2007?  20" tires are a lot of dough! $900-$1000 The 17" tires are more suitable to my wallet.  $450-500.
Thanks in advance!

30-30man, As far as towing go's I love the Hemi. I haven't towed with my truck yet but I have 2005 Durango with the Hemi (3:55 gears) that I've towed with a lot. I tow a 4 place (14"x8") ATV trailer. Loaded it weighs about 4500 pounds. I personally can't compare the Hemi to the 360. A good friend at work had a Quad Cab Ram 1500 4x4 with the 360. He traded it for a Quad Cab Ram 2500 4x4 with the Hemi. Both trucks had/have 3:92 gears. He says the 2500 with the Hemi tows much better. I don't know what "much better" is to him.

I can only compare my 05 Hemi Durango to the 4.7L v8 I had in my 02 Dakota Quad Cab 4x4 and my wife's 03 Durango 4x4. There is absolutely no comparison at all. The 4.7L isn't even close to a Hemi. An example- I tow down Rte. 81. Just south of Syracuse between LaFayette and Marathon, NY it gets pretty hilly, Rage knows the area I'm talking about. My 02 Dakota would down shift about two gears and the engine would turn 4500 to 5000 RPM's just to go up some of the hills at 50 to 55 MPH. My 05 Hemi Durango down shifts one gear, turns about 2500 to 3000 RPM's and will go up the same hills at 65 to 70 MPH. Our 05 Hemi Durango gets about 12 MPG in the city and 18 to 19 MPG on the highway when not towing. I have to keep it under 2000 RPMs to get it. That's about 72 MPH. My mom and dads 2006 Durango with the 4.7L v8 gets the same mileage, with a lot less power. Both my 05 and my parents 06 Durango's are "all wheel drive".

You can get 17 inch wheels on new Rams. My truck came with the "Thunderroad package" which includes the 20" wheels, 3:92 anti spin rear end and Sirius satellite radio. The "Thunderroad package" cost $500.

If you really want to get a new Ram let me know. I might be able to help you out on the price. I work for Chrysler and can get up to six discounts for friends a year. I'd be more then happy to do it. I usually only give one or two away a year. Let me know! :)

Basically you go to a dealer pick out the truck you want. Tell them you have a friend that works for Chrysler and is going to give you a "Friends and Family Discount". It's 1% below dealer cost. I would highly recommend you go to a few different dealers if you can, just to make sure they're giving you the discount. Price may still vary between dealers, some play games and some don't! I also believe they're giving the Hemi upgrade for free "this month". That will save you $1100 or so. I'll have to go online or call to get you the control number.

As far as I know this is the information I'll need from you! I'll be more then happy to help you out. If you buy a Dodge truck you'll be helping me out too! You can give me your info through PM or email. Maybe your dealer can help you out with this too. I'll PM you my email address.!

I don't know, the old Hemi probably wouldn't be to good of a truck engine. They were higher RPM engines. Plus in stead of 12 MPG/city and 18 to 20MPG/highway, they'd probably get about 6 in the city and 10 on the highway!  ;)

30-30 man, if you pull lots of loads I would look into a diesel, especially if you want a Dodge.  It will cost you 5-6 k more but it's worth it. I have a gmc Duramax and when you  need to pull something  the diesel is the best by far. The Dodge has the 5.9 Cummins and that motor can't be beat. Dodge also came out with the 6.7 diesel but I don't think it would be worth an exctra cost if any.

I wish this post would have come out three weeks ago. I just bought the same exact truck. Same color everything except it is the big horn edition (more money for chrome doodads). So far I've been averaging about 14 mpg but its only got 700 miles on it and hopefully once it's broken in it will do a little better. I'm loving it though and am sure you will too.

Love the color!!!!!!!!! Sorry but it not a Chevy Silverado. I have a Chevy silverado 2500 Hd 2003 and love it. It has the vortech 6 liter. I guess i am just partial. My truck has never let me down and I can pull anything I want up to about 10,000 pounds. It has been through 2 feet of snow and alot of mud and I still have not got it stuck. I do keep a little bigger than normal tires on it and they are aggeriseve.I am sure this is a fine truck and thought of one for myself when I wear this one out.

Thanks Dale. I meant to ask new york hunter how he liked his truck. I know I've been riding my bike to work a lot more with gas going up so fast.

GRIMJIM, sorry for taking so long to reply. I really like my truck so far. It's starting to get better gas mileage too. It started out at 9 MPG in the city and 15 MPG on the highway. Now I'm getting 11 MPG in the city and 17.5 MPG on the highway. From talking to some of the guys at work that have similar trucks I should expect 12 or so MPG in the city and 18 to 20 MPG on the highway when I get more miles on it. Right now it has 1700 miles. It pulls my trailer very good too.

I like the color of your truck! ;)

He's not driving it right. They'll get 12 or so MPG city and 18 to 20 MPG highway if you're easy on them. They'll also get minus 10 MPG if you have a lead foot. My truck is a Quad Cab 4x4, 3:92 gears with the limited slip rear end and the mileage improves slightly with every tank of gas. I was wrong about the miles on my truck. It just turned 1600 miles not 1700.

I'm very happy with the 360 being gone!

As far as 17" rims on a hemi truck, yes you can get them, and I have had them for 4 years on my 2003 Ram. The 20" rims may look better (to some people, not me), but the 17's are better in every other way, the tires are cheaper, there is less unsprung weight, and the truck drives much better with 17" rims and tires. My friend's 2004 truck, pretty much identical to mine was a dog on takeoff compared to my truck. He put 17' tires on it for winter, and never put the 20's back on!

I assume your truck has 3:92 gears. Trucks that come with 20" rims also have 3:92 gears. The 20" rims and tires are quite a bit taller then the 17" rims and tires. That gives the feel (acceleration wise) of 3:55 gears. Trucks with 20" rims also lose 1100 pounds of towing capacity (Quad Cab Hemi trucks go from 8500 lbs to 7400 lbs) and they also lose about 100 lbs of payload capacity (1360 lbs to 1260 lbs).

I only got the 20" rims because my truck was the only truck in my area with the equipment I wanted. Now I'm use to them and actually like them. My trailer is about 4500 lbs loaded and I'll probably never put more them 1000 lbs in the box. Plus the 20" rims get a little better mileage on the highway. They both have their pro's and con's. I would have been happy either way.

Update...I bought a used 2004 grey/silver  4wd Quadcab slt Dodge 1500 with a hemi/ 35,000mi from a friend.  He was moving out of state and he only needed payoff which was much lower than the dealers wanted. It came with new tires and an aluminum truck box.  The thing has never been used off road. He only bought it for the boat ramps.   I got the thing for under 15K. I couldn't pass it up.  I looked at a 2007 but the almost $30,000 price tag scared me off.  The tranmission shifts 200% better than the ole clunker 46re. It's great, has lots of power but I can't get use to the drive by wire thing.  It just feels weird.

hemiram, I must say the more I drive my Ram, the more I wish I had the 17" rim and tires.  I have a few other complaint about the truck as well.  A lot of times it doesn't seem like it's in the right gear.  This may be do to the 20" rims and tires I don't know.  I'll be going up a hill and the truck will be slowing down.  I'll give it a little gas and nothing happens.  I'll give it a little more and still nothing happens.  Then I'll give it a little more then all of the sudden it down shifts two gears instead of one gear and takes off like a dragster.  It looks kind of foolish when all I'm doing is driving up my street not towing anything.  My wife's 2005 AWD Durango with the Hemi is wonderful, it's never acted like this, it's a lot snappier too!  It's got 3.55 gears and 17" rims and tires.

There is a BIG difference in takeoff between the 17's and 20" wheels and tires. My truck kind of did what yours does, but when they flashed the truck soon after I got it, and that got rid of 85% of the "lag". The rest went away at 4K miles and after the battery was disconnected when a remote starter was installed. My truck has 3.92 gears with the posi. Mine has just a tiny bit of delay sifting, and it's fine, I'm used to it. My truck's only issue, with the exception of the rear diff having to be rebuilt when it ground up a clip last year, has been a coming and going oil consumption problem. One time, it chugs a quart in 5-600 miles, then it goes 1500, then 1200, then back to 6-700, and then back up to 2000, then back down again. It's not leaking it, my floor is clean, the exhaust pipe isn't really sooty, the coolant has no oil in it, and the oil has no coolant in it. I hate having to constantly check the oil every two tanks of gas. Since I reported it, it has mostly gone over 1000 miles, so Chrysler won't do anything, but last week, it was down a quart less than 700 miles after I had the oil changed and it was right at the full mark. It's running fine, and getting the best milage Ihave ever got around town, about 12.7mpg

My friend was shocked when he put the 17's on, he was busting the tires loose just driving it like he always did, and if he got on it like he did when he was driving it hard, the rear tires would go up in smoke.

I really like the Durango, as long as I don't have to look at one. A friend has an 02 and an 05, the newer one is a much better vehicle in every way, but IMO, it's the most hideous SUV made, except for the gawdawful Pontiac Aztek and it's clones. The Chrysler version, the Aspen looks 10X better, but it's still homely compared to a Tahoe or Yukon. The Dakota is one ugly dog anymore, that front end is just plain bad, worse than the last gen of Chevy trucks, and that was pretty bad.

Great thread, and nice truck!

I picked up mine up 6 months ago. I wanted something newer, and being a high powered gas engine freak, I went with an 03 with a Hemi. The one I found has 60000 miles and was very well taken care of. It's stock and I've gotten 14 mpg at 75 mph and around 11 or 12 in town. Pretty much exactly what I expected for mileage. I haven't towed anything with it yet, and I generally won't be doing much of that, but it seems to have plenty of nuts to do it when the time comes. I'm anxious to see how it does in the snow compared to my previously bulletproof '85. Nothing will be conclusive though till I get rid of these dealership tires. That, and the hideous chrome clad wheels will be gone asap. They'll be replaced with again with 17's which I also like the looks of better than the 20's, but that's just my own old school opinion.

Our Durango is a 2000 with the 4.7. It just went over 100000 miles but the wife likes it too much and I can't talk her into trading up for a newer one. Go figure. It gets worse mpg than the Hemi, but it's been one of the best vehicles we've ever owned.
