Tropico's Six Pack
« on: March 27, 2007, 04:39:39 PM »
I've been gearing up to build 6 barrels for Tropico. They will be machined from 4" stock and measure 26" long. There are 4 Stainless barrels and 2 Bronze barrels. Here is a quick picture. I'm going to start by machining the barrels to legnth and to the same diameter. The bronze comes over sized and it usually isn't round.

There is a soda can mortar on the ground for scale.

These are a custom ..,based on a 24 pounder . We basically sized up a 1970's CVA .50 caliber USS Constitution cannon to 26" then made a few changes .

I have a certain criteria I have to stay under in order to ship over seas for a reasonable price....., after that Shipping goes up to beyond the cost of the cannons. Shipping weight.., length .., ect.,ect., dictated alot of what these cannons could and could not be.

We found a 26" cannon will fit in a 24" box !!! Sideways.

The bore will be 1.50 "

I think I better leave the rest of the questions for Wes. He drew up the design for what I needed and wanted.

We are very excited about this project ., and very grateful to Wes for putting the project together for us.

Would you care for my plans at this late date?  Or those of the Constitution itself?

George your 24 lb'er is an awesome cannon. I have a certain pattern I am set on. I surely do appreciate the offer tho . Your vent field is something I have definitely considered ., I really like the way it came out. At this point tho I hate to change course and am really happy with our lines .

Sorry for the delay guys. I've been having computer troubles? Mainly Internet. I'm just getting everything the same size now. I'll throw up a couple pictures soon. I have to remove the tail stock turret on my lathe to get the room I need to drill these out.

I might take you up on that offer George. For future reference.

EL Cazador 66  thats a smoothie !  .....,yea.., these will make plenty of noise. Rickk  I could fire projos off our beach I suppose..., but these are for our Scuba boat.  I hate to get caught firing projos over there from my ship. Piracy is frowned upon  *Grininng*   ;D  these will be for blanks mostly .  I will build a carriage similar to these at http://www.wildimports.com/44mm_british_naval_cannon.htm wild imports.   this is pretty close to our size cannon and carriage for the boat  and if need be I can fire GRAPES !!!!  ;D  you see if we sink people we cant get the prize      ;D  I figure 1.5 bore with a baby sock full of 38 caliber balls on little broadside of 3 is enough to get me into trouble.  You know how hard it is to hit a target with a cannon........., try it bobbing in the water.  :o

1.62 inch blanks are about the same as 1.5 inch blanks.

Range balls are about 10c each.

If'n you get caught with a load of lead balls out on the high seas it might be hard to explain.   Can they bust ya for possesion of a bag of golf balls?  ::)

but then, it's your 6-pack  ;D

Is 1.62 the size for Golf Balls and the 1/40th proper windage ?   I dont know ? I think people Golf in the Philippines ? The upper crust maybe..., its very very poor. I dont. There is probably a golf course in Manila about 500 kilometers away. there may be one in Cebu at 90 Kilometers away and 2 islands over I dont know? For the most part these are going to be fun noise makers .

We have 2 Hern cannons already on the beach-head as well as a Bronze Wes beer can mortar  that are capable of firing projos. The Philippines sells a dole juice can 1/2 a mm under the 2 1/4 Hern bore.., they work good. The local Baranguy Captain is aware of the cannons and likes them as well as the local Counsilor in our Baranguy .  The first time the Baranguy Captain saw them he laid his hand on the breech smiling and his cheeks flushed.., They sort of like them in the nieghborhood...., its really cool. On the Islands these are important people in our local vicinity .  I am not a Philippine citizen., (My wife is) I do not have gun rights nor 1898 ordinance anything laws.

What I do have is a good situation in a jungle with the locals excited about what we are putting together in there locale. A Pirate themed Scuba Resort.  The coast guard is another enitity which I have no friends and I need to stricty comply with the rules . I know many rules already and I am learning more as I go. THe Coast Guard considers them a signalling device....., all 6 ;D
These cannons will be fine on board and will make noise at a few events really and not just at random or I could lose them.

There are 5 festivals withiin 10 Kilometers south and 6 kilometers north of us.  ;D We hope to get in on them all !!!! ;D

Golf balls are 1.68" in diameter.  Windage at 1/40 would be .042".  I like 1 23/32" (1.719") as a bore diameter for golf balls.

Good measurements.  Golf balls do have standard sizes.

SOME will measure over 1.700"  USED ones are not necessarily spherical.

As a rule of thumb (complete with exceptions) I use 1.700 as being "tight" for a bore and 1.750" for being "loose" for a bore.

You have to clean much more often for a tight bore, loose won't give as good a range.

George's measurements will work, but the rule of thumb is  1/40 of bore diameter.  The difference isn't very significant with golf balls but might be important for bigger guns.

A golf ball gun with proper windage would need a minimum bore of 1.723 inch.
The diameter of a golf ball is 1.68 inch. .  (1.68/39)x40=1.723

Dave,

Can you load a golf ball at all?
Sure! the bore is just even with the cheap balls I buy (Wallmart) the ones the guy across the street gives me drop right in.
They both fire with no problem. As the cannon was built to handle full service loads I don't think it's a problem!

As you've noted, golf balls vary.  Any time you force something down the tube you might well expect higher pressure (and as you've noted if it's built for full-service-loads it'll likely be OK).

The potential problem is when you have to force one in - two issues:  one, will it be safe or will it REALY stick?  and do you have a ram rod that will allow your hand to be NOT-in-front of the tube?

It,s not tight even with the "larger" balls. (I note that the "big name" balls tend to be smaller and weigh the same. Better quality control?)
And yes Wes built me a steel bracket to use as a lifting jig it goes all the way to the deep end, on both the inside AND the outside!

For what it's worth the plastic 1 5/8" round shells that Cannon fuse(listed on the board) sells fit my bore nicely! I'm going to fill them with flour a see if they will SPLAT and leave a discernable mark these old eyes can see. I'm tired of not knowing!

Hey guys, It's been a while. My life and work went nuts at the same time. It seems like the harder I work the behinder I get. Anyway I'm getting back into my shop a bit now and have got started on Tropico's barrels finally. Here I'm starting to clean up the outside and the end's of the barrel. I'll get them all to legnth and drilled.

I'm going to finish that radiused drill this week before I start drilling.

More pictures soon.....
