Bushnell Trophy Pistol Scope
« on: February 21, 2007, 08:56:13 AM »
I have an Encore pistol in .308 Win.  I have a Burris scope on it.  I'm setting my son up with the same caliber also.  Since I paid for the frame and barrel, I'm making him pay for his scope.  His does not want to spend the money on a Burris.  He wants to go as cheep as possible.  I told him you get what you pay for in optics.  I have heard good things about the Bushnell Trophy handgun scopes on this forum.  How well do the Bushnell's stand up to the .308 size cartridges in a handgun?  The Bushnell is half the price of the Burris.  Will the Bushnell hold up over the years or will it be shaken apart within 6 months from the recoil.  He plans on doing alot of shooting with this to get ready for handgun hunting.  Any advice would be great.  The scope were looking at is the Trophy 2-6x32.  Thanks

I've used lots of them, subjected them to more recoil than that will and abused them as well and they've always took it and kept on working.

I have one on a 7-08, and a couple on 44's and I've never had a problem.  The 7-08 is a 15" encore bbl that seems to prefer hot loads so that scope has seen a little recoil with no ill effects.

Guys
Thanks for all the responses.  I figured, based on what I read here that the Bushnell Trophy was a good handgun scope.  I have 3 Bushnell’s on long rifles and they have held up great.  I just wanted to make sure.  The .308 has not much recoil in a rifle but in the Encore pistol it is a different story.  I have a Fox Ridge custom heavy 15” in my .308 and the extra weight helps a little on the recoil.  My son’s setup is just the standard taper barrel so he will have a little more recoil than me.  I talked it over with my son last night and we are going for the Bushnell Trophy Handgun.  BTW my son is only 13.  This year he out hunted me.  He got his first Antelope buck at 415 yards (verified with range finder) with his 7mm mag right through the boiler room.  Then two weeks later got his first Deer.  It was an eastern Colorado Whitetail spike buck.  Got it at 245 yards, one shot, the deer flipped when it was hit.  My son is an avid shooter so we are setting our Encores up for handgun deer hunting next fall.  Shots should be in the 75-150 yard range, based on the deer we saw last year.  Going after does since you don’t need any preference points, used those up for last years buck tags.  Thanks again everyone.

My son also has a .308, 15 inc encore.  Believe it to be " The Hunter Package". Its topped with Thompsons 2-7 ( ? )scope.  Its a  tack driver !  I couldn't believe it, he cuts holes at 100 yds, with Rem. factory 150 gr loads.  I handload for the .308, don't think I can get any better than that for him, other than cost !  Back to scopes, I have a 460 barrel with a Trophy 2-6, It seems to be a harder kicker than the boys .308, Its still holding in there............I'll let you know if it breaks   Good Luck

rrush, if the Bushnell Trophy 2x6x32 can hold up to my 460 Mag and 500 mag handgun, I think the 308 would not be a problem. I have been using the same scope for 3 years now with these rounds.  ;D

Thanks to all who responded.  Went down to the local Sportsman’s Warehouse at lunch and picked up the last NIB Bushnell Trophy 2x6x32 Matte they had in stock for my son’s Encore.  These are popular scopes; most places on the web had the silver in stock but were out of the matte finish.  Midway had them in stock but I could get it local with tax for the same price as Midway with shipping.

Based on the stories you told me here, it should hold up fine to the .308, besides it has a lifetime warranty.  Going to make him shoot it a couple of times with the iron sights before I mount the scope.  That way he will appreciate it more.  Dad caved in and bought it for him so he could save his money.  Thanks again everyone.

I have been pleased with Bushnell, I can't say the same for some of the high dollar scopes.

One of the first scopes I owned was a Bushnell Banner, I bought it about 1961, put it on a BSA 30-06.  It worked very well, and from season to season it was dead on each year when I zeroed before hunting.  This combination has been responsible for 5--6 Elk, a Black Bear, and more deer that I can remember, it has taken a lot of abuse, being  kicked around in the truck, while on horse back, or on dirt bikes.  I don't shoot the 06 anymore, but I would bet if I took dug the gun out of the back of the safe, the little Bushnell would still be dead on.
