Need some ideas on custom project
« on: February 18, 2007, 01:11:23 PM »
All right guys here is what I do know. I am having a Remington 700 SA barreld for one of my favorites the 358 winchester. The action will be blueprinted the barrel will be a 20" Douglass XX #3 contour and for know it will have the stock 700 trigger. This is the only thing I know for sure. What I am toying with is using a stainless barrel with a bead blasted finish having the action teflon coated a matte black or od green for a two tone effect and then dropping it in a synthetic stock.
The traditionalist in me says just have the whole barreled action done in a matte blue finish and drop it in a nice walnut stock.

What do you guys think about the teflon finish, is it tough, does it last, and is it weather proof? Has anyone done a two tone rilfe and if so do you have pictures? How about stock choices for both synthetic and wood?

I've never used a Teflon finish, but I've seen several and handled guns with it.  I like them myself, but I don't like the money that it costs for a good one, usually about $150-$200 or more.  Teflon finishes are all about the preparation of the metal, and if it isn't prepped right, the finish won't be worth a darn.  I've seen several two tone guns and they look pretty neat.

If it were me, I'd either get the stainless barrel and leave it matte, or I'd get a chome-moly and have the whole thing parkerized.  I think that the parkerized finish looks as good as the Teflon, and it's a lot easier and faster for the smith, and a lot less expensive.  Then I'd get either a Bell & Carlson stock for it (if money is tight), or go whole hog and get a McMillan stock with the gel colors mixed in (if money is no object), that way the finish won't wear off.  I think that a parked gun with one of the McMillan camo or marble finish stocks would be a cool  8) 8) looking piece of equipment.  And you know that it's going to shoot too.....

There are a few ceramic coatings that come in different colors and are very durable. I'd check into the corrosive resistant qualities of what ever you're going to use, in relation of what you're going to need. Good luck, and don't forget to show us some pictures when you get it done.

Cera-Kote is supposed to be a superb finish.  It can even be applied to the bore of the rifle.  Cost is about $250 or so, but everything I've read about it is awesome.
