Looking for a breed that hunts the most types of small game. I live out in the boonies, just a family pet to go out hunting with me. I was looking into the black mouth cur, but you guys know more about this than I do. Game isn't really important, just what we run up on, kind of a lazy man's companion. Just walk a ways and shoot something for the pot.

I may remember this bigger than life but when I was a kid I had a cocker spaniel that could do a bit of it all. He was a perfect dog for a kid with a single barreled 20 gauge and a pocket full of shells. --as a sidebar, back in those bad old days, a kid (not a teenager) could walk into the store, put his nickels and dimes on the counter and say "may I have 7 20 gauge shells, number 6 shot, please" and never raise an eyebrow--
Too bad the cocker has been ruined by the AKC and the american female but at one time they were pretty hardy little hunters. To duplicate that ability you would have to get some sort of cocker with close-up english blood. I don't know if a Springer Spaniel would do or not.
I would imagine that any sort of fice would do. All you have to do is spend a lot of time afield with them and encourage them.

A good well bred YBMC should do what your looking for. Thats what I use for cows, and hogs.

As a kid in the late 30s and early 40s we had just an old shepard type dog that could pick pull or haul it to the gin, He could kill a rattle snake in a heart beat, Gather wild cows and pen them, He could also work as a hunter, But you have to consider the fact that all the dog associations did not have any thing to do with his breeding. Back to the point any dog that has this kind of heart will work no matter what his or her breeding is. Poodles are great hunters if you work with them from the get go. The old time cockers were good dogs. People need to get away from a breed of dog and find one that has { lets get to it } attitude. Hope you find that dog that will do it all for you.......Joe.........

I think it means { yellow black mouth cur } A dog commonly used in the south for hunting.

Don I am surprised you would lead this poor man along and not tell him they are the worlds best tree climbing dogs. they are used in the Congo to catch monkeys.

oso45-70 mentions the Poodle and he is so right. I like all dogs and have had a bunch of different breeds in the past 50 some years. Today my all-arounds are poodles. Like oso45-70 says, you have to work with them from the start and after a short time they will train you to their liking. You just have to learn how to use electric clippers.

Good to see another { benefactor } in our midst. It seems like i told a story some time back about a friend who has a Poodle that can do it all, NUMBER 1, He is the best watch dog i have ever seen NUMBER 2 He is as good a stock dog as you could ever want. Number 3 He is one heck of a bird hunter, No matter what kind of birds you were hunting. Number 4 he was pleasant working with other dogs and would honor their points. Hunted him with my Bird dogs, Loaded them all up and not a peep out of any of them. But you hit the nail on the head when you said be ready with the shears and that was some thing i would not like to be involved in { thanks anyway }.... In one of my earlier posts i mentioned pick the dog for his abilities and not his breeding and i stick by that. Its just that some breeds has the mentality to do certain things better than others. I knew a man who had a Boxer that was a heck of a retriever { whodathunket } As we go along life's path we see some very strange things, Make you wonder huh ?.......Joe.......

Basiclly to sum up all that is said for you get a dog from GOOD LONG TIME WORKING LINES lol. Or if not spend all the time you can working with it and it will do what you want.

Shane, That is not what i said or meant. First lets get some history about me and the experiences I have had and see if i can better explain where i am coming from and how i reach the opinions that i have. I had a guided hunt for Mt. Lion, Bear, Bobcat,
operation for several years and used different types of hounds, Most of them were purebred hounds but also ran some cross breed dogs with the pack. Basically what i am trying to say is all dogs can be trained to do some things but, Not all things. If you have a dog that can perform many tasks you are lucky because this dog is just smarter than most, There are some that can't be trained to do anything but eat. You Said { Spend all the time you can working with it and it will do what you want } NOT what i said at all. Key word: WORKING lines. Something that may be hard to do with a poodle or a cocker. Who knows what about a Britney?

"tree climbing" dogs?? I've seen some coon hounds that weren't bad at that.

Had a few dogs through the years, but my VIZSLA is hard to beat for a dog that loves the field...and he loves spending time with the family even more. Mine's a little hyper at times but he takes directions well...it just how these dogs are wired. Here's a photo of a Vizsla I found on the net, hope this link works...

Good looking dog, I have hunted with the Vizsla dogs on many occasions and came to the conclusion the Hungarian's had their eye on the ball all the time, Strange we here in the USA look to the European countries for quality dogs. I have hunted behind several breeds and have found good and bad in all of them. I just lost my Brittany Bitch after a long period of love and companionship as well as one heck of a hunter, Its hard to get over something like that. Take care........Joe..........

Not a problem, I just wanted to let you know where i was coming from, And that i am pretty much a dog person and i like all dogs. I have in my life time owned all kinds of dogs. Back in the fifties i had a little bunch of cows and had a Forest Service permit to run Seventy five cows that came here from Mexico and they were wild as march hares so when it came time to move them out my buddy brought too dogs and said these dogs will do all the work and i said Yea Right, Any way we started at the far end of my lease and those two dog's were unloaded and i said did you steal some Coon Hunters dogs and he said no { These dogs are Catahula's } I said catawhat and he repeated it and i said what in the world are you going do with them, They were funny colored, One blue and one black eye spots all over them, I thought some one had a strange sense of humor but about then the dog's hit a run and cows went to bawling and coming out of the brush like a cat shot in the rear with buckshot, Needless to say my buddy and his two fine dogs saved my bacon. Bugflipper- Don is right about the Visla, it is a great dog. Your best bet is usually one of the German breeds; GSP, Wire Hair Griffon, Wiemeraner, ect... They are great on birds but will hunt anything! The german breeds are usually bred to be a multi purpose dog. If you like American, the curs are all arounders also and less expensive.

Visla's are great dogs. So are redbone hounds. They can be used for Coon and other furbearers, squirrel, deer, hogs, rabbit, birds, and make great water dogs. That's what I used as a farm boy. They are all around hunting dogs.

Bugflipper, You may not beleave this but I own a blue heller that is one of the best squirrel dogs I have ever seen. She is also a good companyon dog and very very smart. SOME TIMES SMARTER THAN ME. I allso have a black mouth curr, shes not as smart but she has no quit in her. Blue hellers can be trained to just about anything .get it while its a puppy and show it what you want it to do and it will then show you how its done. all they want to do is please you. What ever you do dont yell or hit one.That will make it shy away from you and thats not what you want in ahunting partner. If it does something wrong, use a stern tone and explain to it what wrong. I PROMISE YOU ,A BLUE HELLER WILL UNDERSTAND. You need to really check out this breed.

I think a lot of dogs could actually fill the bill. Tops would be redbone, bluetick, walker, black & tan, Mountain cur, Catahoula leopard dog,and Visla to name a few. I had a few mutts of uncertain delineation that were released near our farm, and showed up for a free meal, then moved right in. They were pretty good all-around dogs, too.

This is my first post here, but I have been checking in for awhile. I had to register to answer this post. Bugflipper posted he wants a do-it-all dog. The Deutsch Drahthaar is just that. He said he wants a dog that will hunt all types of small game, the DD will do that and more. He said he wants a family pet to go hunting with -- the DD is not that. It is a hunting dog that can be a family pet. He wants a lazy man's dog; the DD is absolutely not a lazy man's dog. I have a four year old DD and they need to hunt, they need daily exercise, and daily mental stimulation. If they don't get those things, they will find less desirable activities to entertain themselves. They are highly intelligent, with an unbelievable prey drive that will get them in trouble if they don't have a strict training program. They are not for the first time dog trainer/owner. Just my opinion, but but I wanted you to know before you pick a breed of dog to spend the next decade or more with. Contact a good breeder and ask a lot of questions no matter what kind of dog you select. Good luck with your search! Wes & Harry (the DD)

That is a good point. I reread about it being a lazy man's hunting dog. My Moxie would destroy everything I own if she didn't get a good run every day and the opportunity to at least kill voles in the marsh in the winter. I interpreted it as a great hunting dog that is good family pet. My girl sleeps on the foot of my bed and rides around on errands etc. Guarding the truck is a great pleasure for her. They also will kill cats if the cat wasn't there first. And if you have any rodent pets including bunnies- kiss them good bye. Sooner or later they will be toast.

I didn't read all of the posts above, but have you thought about flusher vs pointer?

It's hard to beat springers for a flusher/retriever in a midsized dog. Good natured, tough as nails and love to please.

I mostly hunt quail, chukkar and grouse so I ended up going with a pointer. I have an english setter on the way, she's due around the end of next month! Can't wait, it's my first bird dog.
