Remington 700 243 with 58gr vmax
« on: January 31, 2007, 04:28:53 PM »
A buddy just purchased this gun for varmit hunting. I was wondering who else is using the 243 with the light (58 to 75 gr) vmax bullets and what they are finding for accuracy and how far they shoot confidently. He is hoping for comfortable 400 yard shots..... Any experiences would be appreciated.

I have a .243 WSSM that I am not to fond of ( like a .243 Win. better). I shoot the 58 gr. + 65 gr. + 75 gr. vmax. Out of my Win mod. 70 Coyote. They will hold 1" or less at 225 yds if I do my part.   :)

I've got an old tang safety Ruger in .243 which I like very much. I dropped my dear last season with it using 100 grain partitions. My varmint load is a 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip which chronographs at 3256 fps. This load yield 3 shot .75" groups and I haven't played with the seating depth to try and tighten the groups since I'm happy with the current performance. As with any caliber, practice at 400 yds is a must since bullet drop at that yardage would be a factor. One needs to know the ballistics for the load and use a laser to have the correct range to compensate for the bullet drop or a bullet drop compensating scope.  People just don't accurately estimate range, particularly when the terrain is not level.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

I've got an H&R Ultra in .243 that will put 5 shots with the 58gr V-max into 3/4" all day, better if I do my part. I grain below max with Varget seems to do the trick.

I had a friend who I loaded for with a 700 .243.  His rifle was a big fan of the Nosler 55 gr. and 52.5 gr. of H380.  My 788 likes this load also, longest confirmed kill with it is a predator at 627 yds.

I have some loaded up in my 6mm-284, we will see if it likes them and if they will hold together at 4000 fps ;D Still waiting for heavier stuff to arrive so I loaded these in there on a whim. I had gotten them for my .243 handi, but still haven't picked up a set of dies or brass for it yet!
