I've got an old tang safety Ruger in .243 which I like very much. I dropped my dear last season with it using 100 grain partitions. My varmint load is a 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip which chronographs at 3256 fps. This load yield 3 shot .75" groups and I haven't played with the seating depth to try and tighten the groups since I'm happy with the current performance. As with any caliber, practice at 400 yds is a must since bullet drop at that yardage would be a factor. One needs to know the ballistics for the load and use a laser to have the correct range to compensate for the bullet drop or a bullet drop compensating scope. People just don't accurately estimate range, particularly when the terrain is not level.
