Remington 700 45-70 conversion?
« on: January 20, 2007, 03:54:59 AM »
What would be involved in rebarreling an early 700 ADL to 45-70...Present caliber is 30-06.

You're goona have to have some boltface altering done. 06 is rimless and 45/70 rimmed. You may have to have the stock inletted some also.

I have found some more info...The Remington bolt face is not large enough to expand to 45-70 dimension...Even most 98 Mausers are not but the Siamese Mauser is as is the Enfield, and probably the Mosin Nagant, as these are rimmed cartridge firearms...Oh well, back to the drawing board.

I've seen several 45-70 Enfields on gunbroker.com recently.  If you don't mind the Enfield, that's probably your best bet in a bolt action.

I think I'm going with the Siamese Mauser...I have a line on acquiring one in good enough shape...I will probably send it to ER Shaw for the barrel/action work...I had them do a M98 in 280 Rem and it is sweet.

Shaw does good work, and the prices are reasonable too.  I talked to them back in Sept. about a project, and the turn-around was running about 20 weeks, with 13 of them being until they notified you to ship the gun to them.  I've seen a couple Siamese 45-70's on gunbroker too, prices were in the $500's or higher, but they were kind of rough looking.

I have a 45-70 built on a siamese mauser.  I would highly recommend one.  I have been very pleased with mine.  Good luck on this.

If you want to do this on a 700, just start with any magnum action, and rebarrel it for .458X2in. It'll have the same capacity as a 45-70, but will feed and work properly.

Along the lines of what nobade said, but save some money and get the 458 Mag.

I had a M98 so chambered and used it with black powder and lead bullets.  In reality, a belted 45-90.

A lot of fun but someone else wanted it more than I did.

I also have the Siamese and comparing the two, the M98 seemed to have less felt recoil with stouter loads (not comparing to magnum loads).

Why?  As alluded to above, any bolt action rifle chambered for rimless or belted cartridges make a poor candidate for rimmed conversion.  A 450 Marlin would work better, but all one has to do is download the 458 WM to get to that level.
