Just wondering what everyone else is using / likes on their guns.

I'm going to mount a Burris Signature select 3-10x40 w/ Balistic Plex reticle on my new T3 Hunter, and I'm  pretty sure I'll be going w/ the Burris 2 pc. XTB (weaver style) Bases and a set of Signature Zee rings.

Anyone using this set-up? Any opinions?

Thanks,

YB

I used Warnes on mine. But if I had to do it again, I would likely opt for the Talleys, if for cosmetic reasons alone. The warnes have held up fine with no problems though.

i'm using the Tikka doves that came with it. no scope yet though. i think i'm going with the VX 2-7X33 luppy shotgun scope. i like the wide duplex on the shotgun scopes.

Hey 379,

I'm running Talley's 1 pc. base and a set of his rings on my mod. 7 and really like it.

Got a set of Warne rings on a Sav. 10 ML-II  and although not the purdiest things in the world, they've held up pretty well, and I run some pretty stout loads thru the Savage.

Tennbuck,

Leuppy's Heavy Duplex reticles are the bomb when hunting the thick stuff and/ or low light conditions. You may already be aware of this, but incase you are not, their shotgun / Muzzleloader scopes are parallax focused at 75 yds. vs. 150 yds. for their rifle scopes.
Just some food for thought ;)

I started with the factory rings then switched to the Talley's.  Once piece, four screws for each ring instead of two, lightweight but plenty strong.  I really like 'em.  Rev

Rev,

Are those the one piece lightweight Alloy's you're using?

I couldn't locate a product # for them for the Tikka on Talley's site.

Got at product # for them?

Thanks,

YB

YB,

SWFA (www.swfa.com/c-943-tikka.aspx) has the Talley's for 29.95 plus shipping.  Best price I have seen....Midway wants $10 more plus shipping.  The part # is 930714.  These rings are listed on Talley's site under the Knight MK85/Tikka.  I had a heck of a time finding them too.  I'm torn right now between the Talley's, Warne, and a standard Leupold set up.  A friend has this set up that I can try so I plan to try the Leupold first.  I have always had good luck with Leupolds in the past.

Hi klt,

And welcome to the forum ;D

Ahh! So that's why I couldn't find 'em! Thanks...appreciate the lead.

I can't decide what I want to do for mounts either. I like Talleys alot, but I also really like the adjustment flexability ( for scope positioning = eye relief adjustment) that the Burris Weaver style Bases offer.

Then again, can't really go wrong w/ a Leupold setup either ???

Hmm... decisions, decisions!

tennbuck,  I am using the medium Talley rings with my 2.5-8X36 and I have some clearance.  I have no doubt you could use the low ones with your 2-7X32.  Seems to me that would be a good combination.  Rev

Will the Talley low mounts clear a 40mm objective?

Klt,

They should clear fine. Talley states that their Low mounts can be used with up to a 44 MM objective with a standard contour bbl.

They are known for having rather high mounts in comparison to other manufacturers. I wish they would offer an extra low mount. Like many other folks, I like to mount my scopes as low to the bbl as possible and with a smaller objective like 20 mm, even Talley's low mounts are still too high to accomplish that.

YB,

That's what I figured.  Do you know how the height of the Talley's compares with the factory Tikka rings?  The Talley's look to be well made but I have always used steel for scope rings and bases, so that has me a little concerned about their long term durability.

Look at Marylandeer's rifle on the show & tell thread.  He has a 40 mm scope mounted on the Talley low rings.  Looks pretty good.  Rev

What Rev said  ;D

I just measured a low pr. of Talley's and they're right at 1/2" from the point where the bottom of the scope would rest on the ring...to where the base of it would sit on the mounting rail on top of the receiver.

I also measured the Tikka supplied rings and was surprised that they were only 1/16" lower at 7/16".

I've never heard of anyone having any issues w/ the durability of Talley's Alloy mounts. I was skeptical at first as well, having always used steel also, but after hearing such good feedback on them I decided to give them a try. Funny thing is I still have that particular pr. in the box, I got them to use w/ a 1-4x20 leuppy on a Marlin 336 and they were just too high for my liking with the 20mm objective. I ended up w/ a pair of Super low Burris Zee rings on the 336.

What cal. rifle are you going to be putting them on?

The rifle is a .25-06.  I would think/hope that recoil would not be a problem with these mounts.  I guess what gives them their strength is the fact that the ring and base is one unit.

I woundn't think you'd have any problem with the 25-06.

Lots of folks are using them on their big boomers and seem to be happy with them.

On my Sako 75's I have used the Sako Optilocks and Conetrols. Of the two I prefer the Conetrols. They're very stout and very good looking.

Here's what the rear Conetrol mount looks like:

I have a S&B 3-12x50 Precision Hunter in medium sako optilock mounts. Haven't had any problems yet, get less than 3/4 MOA routinely with this.

I used the factory mounts to mount my Burris 3x9 FF2 on my 25-06.  After a few hundred rounds, everything is still dead center!  And the best part - they came with the gun! (read as I didn't spend any additional money on scope mount)  I know the rings you guys are talking about are top notch, but I can't see the point when the ones that come with the gun are fine.

Just my opinion!

Good point Handiman but....................... I messed up the screws for the rings on my .300 Win Mag ,so I went with the Talley Lightweights which I love to death. On my .243 I had to use Warne Quick-Detach rings because I use 2 different scopes on the same rifle, one for deer and one for varmints. And on my 7mm I got it right and used the factory rings.I actually like all 3 set-ups,but if I had to choose 1 set it would have to be the Talley's.Cany beat them for the price, weight, strength and durability.Hope this helps..........

Is anybody having trouble with the optilock mounts? My new Tikka, fresh from the distributor, came with optilocks.

I lashed out the $80 for the Picatinny rail to mount on my 223. The idea was so that I could use the Leupold QR and change scopes, depending on requirements. I never mounted the rail and sold it on. I find the standard rings work just fine. I'm with Handi, why spend money that doesn't need to be spent?? The scope on my 223 has held zero for a year and no problems on the 308 either.
Anyone tried the Sako 85 varmint rifle? That thing looks gorgeous and I like the idea of the set trigger, push forward and just a few ounces of trigger pull. When I decide which caliber, and save a few bucks, I could see one of those in the gun safe.

I bought the 75 finnlight in 300 win mag  last year and tried the warne rings.  The rings seemed too loose on the base and slid half way off the base on one set before wedging into a stable grip.  Can't remeber if it was the front or back.  I thought for sure that the finnlight was cut to the same specs as the other 75's and would be a size 4 action, but it appeared that the base might be a hair narrower.  Any body else have this issue?.

The Leupold mounts looked OK, but they seemed weak in their claw mechanism and too minimal in their surface area from front to back, which gave me the willies about potentially tweaking/marring my scope for fear of poor allignment.

I also have the optilocks on there now.  Seem to hold up OK, but I too have stripped out the screws and had to have them tapped out. Why can't they make torx screws with real steel??? ???
