My Gunstocks Inc. Stock is Finally Finished
« on: January 10, 2007, 06:22:03 PM »
Hello All,
This is my first post here. I have been reading it for some time now.

I have been planning to order a full size stock for my wife and daughters .243 handi. They both shoot the youth stocked gun very well. Before Christmas, I ordered the Fiddle-back stock from Gunstocks Inc. I ordered the Target/Varmint stock, but I did not like the look on the short barrel, and cut it down. The fore-end is my own creation.

Also for Christmas, I received a $200.00 gift card for Gander Mountain. I said "What the Heck" and used it to buy a synthetic stocked .270 handi. I figured I would use the synthetic stock to send of for any new barrels I would want in the future.

Any way, I just polished with the rotten stone tonight, and put it all together. Here it is.

Thanks Marv,
I feel like I am pretty dead on on my barrel channel. I can't wait to shoot it to see if I need to float it. Every thing seems to be nice and tight. I sure I will get all the help I need here to get this rifle tuned in.

Thanks quick.

  Rick

Rick,
I had to make a decision on whether to order aquifortis for stain, or use some min wax finish I had on hand from a side lock hawken I finished for my son. I experimented with the stain with the wood I cut off from the fore stock. I am used to working with walnut, and the maple was lighter in color than the walnut. I only wanted to darken it a little because I new that the oil finish would darken it some. I mixed a 10 to 1 mixture of 10 parts natural #209 to 1 part red mahogany #225. I then wet it and sanded with 600 grit paper, and it really brought out the curl. I did that about 3 times to take all of the raised grain in the wood. Once you get the wood stained, it takes a lot of sanding to get the color out. I then let it completely dry for a couple of days and started hand rubbing with Tru-oil. It is the easiest finish I have used, and it don't take forever to dry. I hand rubbed about 7 or 8 coats letting it dry 24 hours between each coat. The trick is knowing which coat to quit on, because if you are like me, you are anxious to finish it. After the last coat, I let it dry for 3 days until it is no longer sticky, and then I polish it with Birchwood Casey Stock Sheen and Conditioner. I think it has rotton stone in it because I can feel the grit. After this step, it don't look plastic anymore. I then buffed it with Gun Stock wax, and put it together.

CD,

Thanks for that, it's good to know you can get great results like that with stuff we can all get our hands on.  I'd wondered if you'd used analine dyes, but the mix of stain looks great, and Tru Oil is a great finish.  I've used that quite a bit over the years, and fitted my old Remington 788 with a Reinhart-Fajen stock several years back (walnut) and got excellent results with Tru Oil rubbed down even though I made some mistakes along the way.

Again, very nice work, and I know you're proud of that fine rife.

Beautiful finish!! Glad to see someone else using Tru-Oil. I cut it at least 50-50 with mineral spirits. Been using Varathane oil stains the last couple of times, and like it a lot better than the water-based Minwax stain I had been using. Tru-Oil over Varathane stain has been very satisfactory on "pallet wood" stocks. It'll never fool you into thinking it's real walnut, but it comes out nice anyway. I use Varathane Light Walnut on current NEF yellow birch, and Mission Oak (Gunstock) with a little Summer Oak added to warm it up on older H&R stocks that look like ash or maybe butternut(?).

Well, I raced home today after church, and ran out to our deer camp to shoot the gun for the first time. I bore sighted the scope last night, and I had a box of Winchester Power Points, and a box of Remington Core-lokts. I wanted to see if it shot one better than the other. In four shots, I had it dialed in pretty close to the bull. I could already tell it was shooting were I aimed. I only have about 50 yards to work with there, and all I wanted to do is get an idea of how the gun shot, and I wanted to put some rounds through it.

The first paper is the Winchester 130 gr. Power Points. There are 16 shots there. I did make a scope adjustment during that group. I wasn't real excited about it, but it was the first shots through the gun, and I was getting used to my cheek weld.

The second paper is the Remington 130 gr. Core-Lokts. After about 4 shots I knew that I was on to something. The gun obviously likes the Core-Lokts better. I made 1 scope adjustment  after about 14 shots to raise where the bullets were printing. There are 20 shots there. I know this was only 50 yards, but I am feeling pretty good about my first trip out with it.  I think with a trigger job and a little more breaking in, it will be even better. I can't wait to take it out to 100 then 200 yards.

The scope is a Bushnell Banner 3x9x40 with Weaver extra high rings. So far I like the raised cheek piece because you still have the feeling of a scope being low, but the extra high rings give a little more trigger clearance. If anyone decides to order this stock, the regular Weaver high rings are not high enough. I tried with ones I had.

Thanks for all the replies guys.

Alright, I guess the Winchester group did not get added to the post. This is that first group.
