Contender frame or G2 frame Opinions
« on: December 16, 2006, 04:56:28 PM »
I currently own 1 "old style" Contender frame and I just recently bot a new Pro-hunter Encore. I am shooting T\C's more and I really like the products they have.

So, I am thinking of getting another Contender frame but I'm wondering if I should buy a new G2 or just pick up another old style frame. I like my current old style frame. I had it back to the factory and had the easy open hinge put on it.

The reason I am looking at another frame is more for convenience. I have a rifle setup on my current Contender, and I have 2 other barrels that I can swap, but I really would just like to leave the rifle setup alone as I hunt with this setup about 3 times a week when it's not big game season. (Yeah...tough life).

The other 2 barrels are handguns. An encore frame is out as I don't want the larger frame.

Opinions? Old? New?

Thanks.

Dave.

I have both, the older one has a slightly better trigger. Both have had trigger work. My G-2 and encore triggers are about the same, I would say "very, very good". The old contender I would say was "excellent". I am a fairly good shoot, but not good enough that the trigger is a problem for me.
I think that the only other thing  that might make a difference to some people is the fact you can use the new blackpowder barrel from TC on the G-2 and not on the older contender. ( T/C made it so it would not mount on the older frame.
OK, thats my two cents worth, somtimes I even get change back .
OH , one other thing. What is wrong with having one (or some) of each?

Neald,

Nothing wrong with one of each. I guess the advantage of the G2 is that I could get the in-line M\L barrel for it, and the other advantage would be if the hammer is cocked, and then de-cocked, the frame doesn't have to be opened to re-set the trigger like it does on the older frames.

However, if I want an in-line M\L I can just get one for the Encore (which I already had a trigger job done on as the factory pull had major creep and was heavy). The trigger on the older Contenders are good as they come from the factory or if they need work, they are not difficult to do.

So, now that I think about it, I don't see a compelling reason to buy a new G2 frame over the older type.

Thanks. It always helps to have a ear to bounce this stuff off of.

Dave

I have both and like both for different reasons. G2 is handier and easier to use for my son...I think built a little heavier duty. The original is a nicer looking frame and as mentioned better trigger. The last time I had the choice i bought the G2.......

I own both my old frame is set up with my 7mm TCU scope and bipod so it never gets broke down shoots too good. G2 is my choice to change barrel on. The next one I am looking to buy is a G2 with the black powder barrel. Unless I find a good deal on an older frame because I do like the old engraving.

I am returning after a long period of being away (so long I lost my userid to someone else it seems)...

I am in the same position as I just purchased a T/C 300-whisper 10-inch Contender barrel and I am trying to decide which to buy.  I know that the earlier Contenders have triggers that can be adjusted by the owner while I understand the G2 is not that way.

My new barrel, mount, scope is all stainless so I will be shopping around to see what I can find.  My father has had a T/C Hunter in 30/30 for 20+years and he has got more then a few deer with it.  So, what I may do is look for a used T/C with a super 14 in 30/30 so we can share reloads.

I just need to make the Old, Newer, or G2 decision...   ???

What was your "old" userid? Have you been gone longer than since November 2002? If so we did change software then and everyone had to register again.

I like the old style, I have two old style frames.  Had an Encore for a few years but sold it off.  No desire to get a G2 style.

Every year I get another year older and more set in my ways. The original Contender (bought the first one in 1982) has always felt like an old friend in my hands. Generally mine wore either Pachmayr Rubber Grip and Forend or the Herrett Finger Groove / Thumbrest Grip and Matching Forend, but in later years I kind of got to liking the newer Rynite Grip and Forends also. The Triggers are the original Contenders are second to none in my opinion.

Well I got out of the Contender Game for a short period of time and just recently decided I had to get back to shooting Contenders. Well I pondered the same question you are pondering. Mine will have multiple barrels, but all will be Handgun Barrels. As I was searching for an older Stainless-Steel Contender Frame my buddy picked up a new Super 14 .223 G2 Contender. The first time I handled the new Rubber Grips on the Stainless-Steel G2 Contender I made my mind up fast.

I have since bought a new Stainless-Steel G2 Contender Frame, a Custom 14" On Target Technologies .22 LR Match Barrel and a Factory Stainless-Steel Super 14 .223 Barrel. I had a local smith do a Trigger Job on my G2 Frame and it turned out super. It is crisp and clean and breaks exactly at 2 pounds. I think the trigger on my new G2 is just as good as the triggers on the many original Contenders I have had over the years after Bob's fantastic trigger job.

In my opinion the slight change T/C made to the Grip Angel and the New Rubber Grip on the G2 feels much better when shooting off the bench. In fact I like this new G2 Frame so much I am going to be picking up another on in the not to distant future. I also like the fact that the hammer can be decocked and then recocked without breaking open the action. Yep like a lot of shooters / people I do not like change but after the fact am glad I picked up a new G2 Contender.

"Quarterbore" and yes, it has been a LONG time since I was around...  I used to be active on the hunting type forums but my interests shifted a little over the past many years...  But hey, I am not Quarterbore everywhere as much as I try  ;D
