New CZ 550 FS 9.3 x 62 MM Scope and Ammo Questions
« on: October 29, 2006, 04:22:56 PM »
Hi Guys,

I ordered a new CZ 550 FS in 9.3 x 62 MM last week and it is supposed to arrive shortly.  From looking at the optics section of the Midway online catalog it looks as if the there are no bases involved in mounting a scope but the rings fit the milled slots in the receiver much like a Ruger.  Is this true and do the rifles come with rings?

I ordered the rifle because it looks like a real thumper on paper and the 9.3 is a caliber I don't have.  Don't really need much for most Texas whitetails except I think this will be easy to load down for pleasant shooting both at the range and in the deer fields.  Got some PRVI ammo from Graf's with the 286 grain bullets and they are wicked looking.  What is the consensus on their performance?  Anyone know the exact ballistics or where I can look with me having to learn the metric system?  Is the PRVI boxer reloadable?  Also bought some 236 grain Norma ammo. which should be good.  Any opinion?  Any pet loads to share?  I am not a "hot rodder" but just like accurate, comfortable loads and this cartridge looks like it has great potential when I go after bigger, meaner stuff.

Bought the full stock because I've always liked the look but never owned one.  I want to get a scope that compliments the look and I want a variable up to about 5 or maybe 7 power, but I want one with a straight tube at the front instead of a bell.  I think this looks better on a classic stocked rifle.   Opinions and recommendations appreciated!!!  Any one know of a scope that would fit my scheme?  I'll put some pics on here when I get it set up and let you guys know how it shoots.  Should I be scared?  I've shot a Ruger #1 in .458 Lott and It is Scary! at the bench.  Otherwise I can shoot just about anything and I am not recoil sensitive.

I enjoy all these forums and your posts.

Thanks,

Blowtorch

Recoil won't be a problem even with heavy 9.3 loads.  If you intended game is deer and the occasional hot then I would check out the Speer 270 RN bullets.  THey are cheap and pretty accurate and will work great on deer/hogs.  IF you step up to bigger critters like elk/moose, big bears, or feral cattle, the 286gr Nosler partition is hard to beat.  I haven't as yet shot any factory ammo but have heard favorable impressions with the Privi ammo.

As for a scope I think you would be hard pressed to find a better one than the 1.25-4 leupold Euro-30 or 1-4 in VxI or VxII.  Those two are hard to beat for the money.  As for rings I think warne and talley both make rings to fit the CZ550 action.  I would try to get some quick release rings.  Both are nice rings, the tallyes are lighter and probably better but for the money its hard to go wrong with the warne.

I use the 9.3x62 for general purpose hunting here in alaska and after taking a few moose with the caliber can't say enough good things about it.

Thanks Bear.  I would love to hunt in Alaska some day.  I am supposed to get the rifle tomorrow and I like the Leupold Euro idea.  I think that's what I will go with.  I bought some 270 Gr. Speers so I have 100 on hand.  I have heard nothing but good about the PRVI ammo,  even from hunters.  I am going to a game preserve weekend after next with some of the guy's I work with so I might try it on something there.  Can't get on the gun ranges this week in Houston because deer season opens this weekend in Texas and they are packed.  Will have to shoot it this weekend when everyone is in the woods.  I am also going on a Nalgai hunt soon in South Texas and they are some big, tough critters.  Had a hunt for them one time with a .338 Mag. and it wasn't too big for them.

I have heard those nilgai are tough critters.  I would check out the 286gr partition or the barnes 250 or 286 X bullets.  THe northforks bullets are also supposed to be really good bullets.   Good luck.
