35 is on the way
« on: October 23, 2006, 09:58:09 AM »
I ordered a 35 Whelen Handi Rifle a couple days ago. It should be here Thursday. I found a die set at Sportsmans Warehouse. I bought on box of factory loads. They are Federal with the 225 Trophy Bear Claw bullets. Thas all they had.. I can make some brass or order Remington BRASS. Cabelas has it in stock. Anyone know any other places that have it on hand? Midway does not have it because they say its seasonal.

I think I will send the new 308 ultra hunter in for the 500 S&W barrel.
shot placement is everything.

Congrats!! Grafs has it, $3.95 shipping too! Don't get used to the Federal ammo, it's been discontinued. :(

You should be able to fire-form .30-06 brass like they did in the "old days."

:)James, I ordered a Whelen from Walmart couple of weeks ago. They had it in four days. Generally a good experience, but they are very particular about the paperwork. The Whelen is now at my machinist friend's shop having a good set of iron sights installed. This will be a walking/stalking rifle. Ammo is available locally for $18 a box. Not many people around here own a 35 Whelen, so ammo doesn't move very fast off the shelf. Good shooting with yours!  Hunman55

My local shops both have Whelen brass available so I picked 50 up already.

I have never seen Whelen ammo on a shelf, so I doubt I will shoot factory ammo first for this chambering.

I stumbled on RCBS dies yesterday, so I bought it - I thought I was going to be mail order for those.  This is my first set of RCBS dies.

I also saw some Nosler 225 Balistic tips on the shelf yesterday.  Initially I thought these would be what I was going to shoot, until Nosler discontinued them.  I dont want to fall in love with something that I cant buy in the future so I passed on them.  Too bad, because this was one bullet box that Nosler was price competitive with.  Oh well, maybe thats why they dropped it, were not able to stick it to us on the item.  Eventually, the 358 dia BT is going to be replaced with a 358 dia accubond.

Next on the list is to decide on my first powder choice for this one.  Its getting difficult to keep the number of different powders I use managable. I just picked up H110 for the 357max and the 44mag.  I could use Varget initially for the Whelen, but I dont think it will satisfy me. Im not shooting enough anymore to use up a pound of powder in each gun very quickly.  Life was much simpler when I just experimented with the 30-06.

Nosler dropped the 180 grain BT for the 338's as well...and soon they will be doing away with the 200 grainers too...all switching over to the Accubonds...They aren't a whole lot more...about $5.00 a box...not to bad for a good bonded bullet...You can do what I did...just order as many as you can find and stock up on them..Nice thing about them in the same weight..they fly just as good..and to the same POI...so when you run out..you can just switch over..
