2006 NEF successful hunt
« on: October 11, 2006, 04:24:53 PM »
Just finished opening the antelope season. Used my Browning BLR 257 Roberts and my Hunting Buddy used his NEF 270.

Yep, there are four there, half of them taken with a NEF 270 with Remington 150 factory loads.

This is not the ideal way to open an antelope hunt!

I saw the distance for the BLR on another post, what kind of yardage did the 270 NEF connect on?

The first NEF shot was about 200 yds (not measured), and the second shot measured 247 yds.

That rifle will really shoot. Last year it filled antelope tags at 461 and about 250 yds.

Way to go. That white stuff actually looks good from here. We'll probably be in short sleaves opening day Nov 4th down here in Texas.

mt3030 I have never tried antelope yet. What's your speciality on the ole' BBQ with the meat?

I don't know why but the animal looks like it would have good meat, tender...not like an old greasy tough bear steak!

bearfat:
It's very mild and extremely tender. The steaks can be cut with the side of your fork. I prepare it just like the whitetail and mulie. Marinated for BBQ or lightly seasoned and fried. People have told me it reminds them of lamb, but since I have never eaten lamb, can not say for sure.

I have found a world of difference between spring and fall bear meat. In the spring, the bears are on a weight loss, and the meat suffers. In the fall. they are eating a lot of berries and apples (when available), and the meat is better. Either way, bear meat is way down my list of favorites.

NEF Ultra 25-06 comes thru again. These two whitetails were my #4 and #5 in our deer season. I started by using my Browning BLR 257 Roberts, but think I'll stick with the 25-06. It just reaches better and the heavier (117 vs 100) bullet bucks the wind better.

My buddy chose this Mauser Model 93 in 7x57 over his NEF 270 for his # 4 and #5. It worked very well, but I think he missed his scope on the longer shots

Here's all four of the days work, stacked in his truck.
