.45-70   I don't care if it richochets off the moon, plinks a star or two, bounces off the sun.  It really doesn't matter cause it kills when the big rainbow ends and it comes down at 300 - 500 yards.  Get off your butt cheeks and get out and really shoot one.  IT IS NOT JUST A 100 YARD RIFLE!!!!!   Anyone hear that???

45-70    With out a doubt !!!
ONe thing, on the tangent that was introduced here , IF OBama Sen Laden gets in , in a few weeks , one  "RUMOR"  that has been floating from his camp is that he will try to go the route of South and Central America  as the  " Camels nose under the tent"   There they do NOT allow ownership of firearms in  " ANY military caliber"
So those with 223 ;30-06; 308; 7.62x39  may have to give them up   EVEN if they are single shot .  OH and since there WERE MIlitary guns  made in 7x57; they might be  " Grandfathered " in . OF course  45-70 WAS a military round too !!!!!!!!!!!!!
That would also  eliminate  45 ACP;9mm;38Spl.; and 380 in  handguns too.
SO  that would leave the 30-30  or  270, or 35 Whelen as viable calibers for owners of ONE handi .

There's also a lot of 7.62x54Rs running around loose they'd want to gobble up also.  I'd hate to see it happen, but my CharltonHestonits would have to tell 'em to go for it......just make sure you can muster enough willing troops first.  It might take a few.

Dead doc:
You seem to have left out a few.
The 30-30 was a staple as an on board gun for the navy.
The 12 ga was and still is the weapon of choice for clean and sweep operations.
Don't forget the 303,6.8,22lr and many more.
Sounds ridiculous doesn't it.
If they do come for them I hope GUESS WHO? is up front!

Very cool I want to be one of the very first to turn in my military ammo.  I hope they don't mind that I turn em in bullet first one at a time.

If you could have only one Handi, which caliber would you choose?

People that have as many guns as I do scare the hell out of me.

Having said that, I would pick the .375Win.   Load it with a sphere and it's a quiet squirrel gun, 3 spheres or cast bullets it's cheap to shoot and heavy hitting.  Pistol bullets (jacketed) and you have something flatter shooting.  It's a compromise that covers a lot of uses.

I'd have to have the 45-70.

And before anyone asks me why I'll just tell you.  I have 150 gr collar buttons I plan on using on rabbits, 405 gr round noses for whitetails, and 500 gr round nose for bear.  All from one gun.

It cloverleafs at 100 yds with 405 gr rounds (and 300 gr remington factory loads) and it will dink a four foot metal silhoutte of a buffalo at 800yds with a 500 gr round nose. And no, not aiming at the moon, for the "old school" challenged I use a thing called a Vernier sight that adjusts through a five inch range.
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!
