J-frame rear sight blade question
« on: October 02, 2006, 09:32:22 PM »
I need help find a replacement rear sight blade.  I had a J-frame rear sight custom installed on a Ruger SP101.  The one I have is solid black and has an opening of about .125".  I want to replace it with the rear sight blade of the same size but with the white outline that are common to other S&W sights.

I tried the S&W website and the only one they had was smaller than .125".  I tried Brownells and MidwayUSA and no luck unless I just wasn't looking correctly.

I bought a replacement rear sight blade for a J frame kit gun from Midway, but I prefer plain black. Are you sure they don't have it? I remember looking through a binch of them when I bought the one I have. Shotgunner

Good luck. The only sight I know of is a model 63 (or possibly a newer models) and I don't think any of the different series of this gun had a white ouline? By the way, if it is off one of the model 63s, it is stainless steel sight, I know it's probably black in color.

I just purchased and installed a w/o rear blade for my J frame. Listed on the S&W web site for $10.

K frame rear sight blades will fit a J frame sight base but, they need to be narrowed down to size. You simply measure the original and file 1/2 off each side until you have the right width. Of course you understand that you'll have to replace the screw and probably the nut(I think the nut on J frames is smaller diameter, than K framed guns), the threads are the same for the screw and the nut.
Maybe Bob96 has got something there, maybe S&W is now making them in different heights and with white outline?
Worth a check to see. Sure would save a lot of time and trouble.

Sorry, I should have stated that the measurement is from side to side in the opening.

S&Ws measurements are from the very top to the bottom of the blade, not including the threaded part, on the very bottom. Hope this is clearer than the mud it sounds like, to me? I don't believe that a different apenture width is available? So, you should be alright ordering from Brownells, S&W or any other place?

Hello
Millet Makes replacement sights that will fit your revolver. The cost is $54.00, but by the time you spend on a new white Outline blade if you can find one, and have a competent Gun smith install it, as it will take a new spanner nut along with carriage screw as they most time break when trying to get a sight blade out, I believe you will be Past the cost of a complete bolt on sight from Millet. You can then sell off the One you have on Flea-Bay as they often will net close to what the Millet replacement will cost. Here is a direct Link to Millets sight page for replacement sights for your revolver. I hope this helps, Hammerdown.

Hello SB
Right you are, and you must also have the small spanner wrench to hold the main screw that goes through the sight blade when Installing a new one, or you can not get it tight. I have one made up of an Old snap ring tool, But I know Brownell's sells them. Regards, Hammerdown
