Smith 29-2
« on: October 01, 2006, 01:25:42 AM »
At my favorite gunshop they just trade for a smith and wesson nickel 29-2.  It has a 8 3/8 barrel, with the wide trigger and groove smith wooden grips.  It is in very nice shape.  They are asking $600 for it.   I asked them to hold it for me to think about it.  I posted it on another fourm and a few thought it was pretty high.  What do you guys think?  Thanks!

I have to agree, it is a little high. $500 is more of a realistic number in my opinion.

I agree also but like Redhawk1 said I think its a little high. $500.00 would be a good price for it.

I know a local dealer who took in a bunch on unfired S&Ws from the 70s. He got $650 - $ 750 for the N frames, and they sold quickly. As I said these were new in the box guns, and I thought that was a little high. If this gun is used and in 98% condition in might be worth $600, but it would have to be almost perfect. If I wanted it I would offer $500 and see where it ended up. Shotgunner

Nowhere near enough information to say anything about the price, other than it was a trade so you can bet on the very high side dealer has 400 in it if asking 6, and unlikely they have that much in it.  29-2's are all over the board in pricing.  You say it is in very nice condition, that doesn't really say anything.  Is it better than 90% and less than 95%?  Between 95%-97%, 98 or 99%?  All very different prices.  The only thing I can say for certain by your description, if it is an S prefix serial number go ahead and get it and don't worry about it, it is more than likely an N prefix serial number and in that case I'd offer him a quick 25% over what he has in it tax and all out the door.  Of course knowing what he has in it is the trick, and don't believe one word out of his mouth on that subject.

600 bucks !
I had no Idea they were selling for that !
I have the less well known Short Barrel on mine
and I would almost sell it for that much !
It even came in the wooden presentation Box !
(Which I still have)
I have a 29-2 and really like it, But There is no way I would pay
$600.00 for one.

Well it doesn't matter if it was 98 or 95% it is gone.  I thought about it for awhile and told them to put it back on the floor.  That was Monday afternoon, I came back to the shop today to help a friend pick out a shotgun and it was gone.  I am not kicking myself in the butt over it.  I have two other guns on the burner right now I have on layaway.  A nice ruger security six with orginal grips (asking $198, a steal)  and a low number smith 610 (asking $625).  Thanks for your comments everyone!

Something is worth whatever someone will pay for it. Some of us wait for only a good deal. Others pay what they have to for what they want. Sometimes you wiss out. There will be another if you are patient. Shotgunner

A few months back I paid $600 for a S&W N-frame. It was a NIB stainless steel 625 mountain gun in 45 Colt, 1994 production, pre agreement, pre lock, with box, papers, etc.

Sure it might have only been "worth" $500 but how would I have been able to find another one at any price?

Without pictures, it's hard to say. Also, you didn't mention if the wood box(and condition of box), cleaning equipment, or manual were with the gun. Then again, the biggest consideration is, Do I want this gun? Then Price doesn't seem to matter.  Please yourself. YOu will never please every one else on the internet.

I just got a 29-2 nickel with a 4" for $450 + tax at my local pawn shop.  No box or papers, but the gun was in 99% condition.  I think I was lucky to get it at that price.  $550.00 would have been top dollar, in my opinion, for such a nice condition gun, so $450 felt like a deal.

I know if it was ment to be you will find one ;D.  At the time it seemed to high and still does.  It didn't come with anything.  Just the wheelgun and a soft case.  If it did come with everything it would have more than likely have been put on layaway.  Thanks for the comments everyone!

If you are still looking for a 29-2 I have a blue 8 3/8 inch in pristine shape,N serial number,  95% or better, just some blue holster wear around muzzle.  It has a pinned barrel and recessed cylinders.  Target hammer, trigger, RR front, WO rear, Target stocks and an extra pair of rubber grips, holster , but no case or paperwork.  It hasn't been shot much.  I have a Redhawk with scope I use for hunting now and the Smith just sits in the safe.  Let me know if you are interested.

Sounds like a nice one, but right now I think I will pass.  I have two handguns I am picking up this Friday and I will be broke for awhile :)  I wouldn't want to hold you up to sell it to someone else.  I thank you for the offer.  Funny thing I went to my gunshop and the lady said "when are you planning on picking that smith up?"  I said what smith?  They forgot to put it back on the floor ;D  I thought about it, and said to just put it under the glass.  I has still be sitting there for about a week.  If it is there for another month or two I might try to talk them down on it ;D  Thanks everyone for your comments!

Hello
I am seeing this a lot lately. For awhile guy's were simply spending what owners of these model 29s would fetch and placing high prices on them. I see a lot of them at gun shows at the same prices being packed away and returned home, due to over pricing. I like them but if they have isues like bluing missing, corrosion, loose cylinder's scratches and such, they are not in 95 % condition and need to be adjusted on price. If it takes a reblue or renickel to make one look in the upper 95% condition again and this places the revolver's value at 50 % of what it is supposed to be worth then why arent the used guns going for 50% of value in this used worn condition by the sellers? I feel very few seller's are able to grade condition in the first place, and my favorite selling line is "This gun is unfired" ALL are fired when they leave the factory, and a quick turn of one over on it's back and a visual of the top strap above the forcing cone quickly shows if they REALLY are unfired as well. Most I have Looked at that claim this have the flame cut line that is NOT able to be removed for this claim  ;) Something to think about.  ;D Hammerdown
