reloading the .243 win. - update
« on: September 30, 2006, 11:55:08 AM »
hello;

first let me say "thanks" for the input by others.  never can leave things alone.   back to range today.  rifle is a howa mountain rifle with a 20" bbl.

spent some time looking for more reloading data on the .243 win. with 95gr. nosler bt and 100gr. rem. bullets.

100gr. rem. bullet, worked up to 44gr. of imr 4831, speed 2940fps., no sign of pressure, easy bolt lift, primers are not flat, group size .685".  found something!

95gr. nosler, any thing above 42.5gr. imr 4831 got big changes in speed.  avg. 2800fps, but min and max speeds were 100+fps difference.

4 shots, even with a little time between shots, and the bbl. got HOT HOTT
 HOTTT!

thanks again for info.

im familiar with the .243 round in a few guns but not familiar with the howa mountain rifle. is it a skinny barrel rifle?if it is,the barrel will get hot in 4 shots fairly close together. your extremely lucky to get that kind of accuracy out of a light rifle.i like the 100 grn rem. it has killed bunches of deer for me. with the speed your pushing it, any hit in a vital area will result in quick ,clean kills.post a pic of your rifle if you can! and a little history on the model too.

try Varget with the 95 grain nosler ballistic tip. that shoots half inch groups out of my A-Bolt at 100 yards, 5-shot groups. no kidding. mine likes 33.5 grains.
