New 9.3x62 American
« on: September 28, 2006, 03:14:28 PM »
Just got my new gun a few weeks ago.  It took 2 tries as the first gun was damaged by the shipper (stock).  I installed a cheap 2.5x10 42mm varmint scope (A.O. / Mildot) I have lying around in the factory rings.  They are the perfect height for this size objective.  The scope looks stupid and the rings are ugly but the combination seems to work fine.  I've been to the range twice, shooting S&B 285's and Prvi 285's to break in the barrel and sight it in.  The first round out of a full magazine would bind a little, and the bolt was a little tight when all the way to the rear, but 3 boxes of ammo, liberal doses of tetra gun and my favorite synthetic lithium grease seem to have helped and the action is smoothing up.  I am in the process of loading up some Barnes TSX and Nosler BT 250's, 270 Speers and 320g Woodleighs using Graf brass.  (I wanted to have a 3900+ ft.lb. TSX load ready for Oregon Coast Blacktail Season, but I will have to use the last of my Prvi 285g supply.  I hope it will be sufficient!  ;D )  I am curious what the handloads will chronograph and how they will group, as I have 0 experience with both 550's and 9.3's.   Having just about every manual that lists loads for the 9.3x62, including all the handloader back issues that are pertinent hasn't really helped me pick likely powders, (or maximum loads!?!)  but I will be using RL15, H4895, Varget, IMR 6064 and maybe H414 to start.  Has anybody  "been here and done this?"  Can anybody tell me where I can buy (9.3x62) RWS tug ammo and brass in the US, and if anybody imports the full range of S&B, Norma, etc. in 9.3x62.  Love the gun, by the way.  I think it may be the best $ I've ever spent.  I'm all too happy to fiddle around looking for and building ammo, considering.

You should check out Handloader/Rifle magazine.  There have been a couple of reports on the 9.3 Mauser and other 9.3 cartridges.  The have a couple of fans of the 9.3 on staff.

My cz 550 Lux likes the speer 270 gr with 56 gr of Varget. The speer is a soft bullet but fine for pigs etc. I am unsure of Velocity. The cases are Lapua (best brass money can buy IMHO)
