Carbon Arrows and longbows
« on: September 26, 2006, 02:41:30 PM »
Has any one ever tried using carbon arrows with a longbow? I've seen guys use 75# draw, 190g heads, and aluminum arrows for some devastating results. Is this necessary for through penetration with the slower velocities from longbows?
I have a 55# bear, montana longbow, and I want to set it up for deer, black bear, and wild boar.
I plan on using a fastflight string, carbons, and 125g heads.
I shot 165fps through the crony with easton aluminums, a 100g head, and a dacron string. Not awe inspiring, but packs a decent punch. Can it do better if upgraded? or is it not worth the effort?
Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks

 Dear Swampthing:
Ain't nothing wrong with carbons. But do try some heavier shafts and check the difference in penetration. Perhaps some hardwoods that weigh in at about 600 grains finished.  You might be really surprised! I sure was!
Not much of a problem at all in trajectory at up to 20 yards. Certainly wouldn't be expensive for a half dozen hardwood shafts.                                                    Woodbutcher

First off...find out from the manufacture if your bow is rated for fast flight string and light weight arrows...If it is...then follow what weight arrows you should use...I switched over to carbon express wood grained carbon arrows this year...and gained an additional 35fps with mine off my custom Earl Hoyt Hunter Supreme...It was already set up with fast flight..Second...the heavier the arrow(assuming cut on impact broadheads) the better the penatration on game...If going after bears/ hogs with a 55 lb long bow at your draw lenght...go for the heaviest arrow you can stabalize...it will make a difference...granted your range will have to shorten some...but you won't have to worry about getting into the vitals as much either...Also...on a 55lb bow...using full lenght carbons...you might want to consider a little lighter head.,..say something around 100 grain...I like the Montec G5...it flies great..and penatrates deeply..Here's what I'm shooting...

You can't hardly tell they are carbons till you pick them up..

You can cry me a river... but...build me a bridge and then get over it...

175fps with 27.5" Beeman Hunter Elite 500's, 100g tip, and dacron string.
Turns out I was drawing too far back past the corner of the kisser when I last cronyed the aluminums, they are 145fps when pulled to same draw as the 175fps carbons.
I'll have to take this thing boar hunting with some two blade, Zwickey style, heads.
I guess with this length arrow, 125's would alter the FOC too much.
Anybody have any luck with similar arrow speed and weight, 385g, on game? or should I go heavier?
Thanks again

Last Sept (2005) I shot through a large, blue ferrel hog with carbons that weighed out about 450 gr with 125 gr of that weight being a Zwickey Eskamo two-blade.  My bow whipped these arrows out at a blinding speed of about 168 fps.   :D  The hog went about 10 yards and piled up in thick reeds that surrounded a swampy pond--it could be he hung himself on the reeds they were so thick, but I like to think it was because the arrow went through both lungs and split the heart along the way.

I have had similar success on black bear at the same blinding speed.  The last bear was about 6 years away, and when it stopped, angling toward me, and turned its head back away from me to look at the bait, I placed the arrow into the soft spot by the collar bone and it came out behind the ribs on the off side.  That bear died trying to cross the log on which I had dumped honey, mollasses, and oats.

I short draw a 60# bow (probably works out to about 55-57#), and the arrows are 30.5" long with 5" shield-cut feathers on them over white wraps.  This rig also handles deer just fine.

Best of luck, Arch

That sounds like a great set-up. I also "short draw." With my 27.5" arrows it is tough to get the arrow weight up with carbons and without throwing off the FOC.
My set-up looks to be close enough to yours that medium game inside 25yds shouldn't be a problem... with good shot placement of course.
Thanks again.
