How Old
« on: September 25, 2006, 04:35:40 PM »
Local smith called me about a lefty Winchester 70 in 7mm Mag.    Don't need it but it has beautiful wood, and only has 1 box of shells through it and includes the scope and rings.  Price is $1100 for entire set up.  A little high I think.   Serial number starts with the letter G and then has a series of numbers.   The closest we can figure by when the original owner bought the gun was in the middle 80's.   I have a new 04 Winchester in 30-06  and it is not close to the 7mm in smoothness of the action or finish in the metal and wood.   The gun also has the bottom metal with 3 screws.     Does anybody have a better guess on the age, or where I can look.   Thanks,  Curly

You've run into the Winchester Model 70 premium price paradox. For some reason folks are willing to pay more than their true value. That one sounds like a good'un, and now that they are out of production, the price will only go one way. Up! Try contacting USRAC about the age of the gun, although there are some sites where collectors will have the necessary data.

The G series of serial #s started in 1969 and from what I can see in the blue book ended in 1981

Curly,

Winchester started making left hand M/70's in 1997.  That one sounds like a real nice rifle.  Price seems high but they are not making them anymore.
