CZ in 22 Hornet vs 223

Variation on an old argument, but which would you buy?  I have a Savage 223 and like it, but it is a beater.  I am looking forward to the tax return in January/Christmas from the wife.  I want a nice rifle for my son to have as a youth plinking, varmint rifle.  The 223 will do anything that the Hornet will do, but the Hornet is just interesting.  So.....

1.  How hard to ream to K-Hornet?
2.  Any CZ horror stories?
3.  Any alternatives?  I have seen the Browning 22 Hornet and wasn't really impressed.
4.  What about the 7.62x39? 

The CZ is competing in my mind with a youth Model 7 in 243 or 260.  Different justifications for the calibers, but an interesting rifle either way.

 I've got a cz in 223 and it's great light easy handling accurate looks good too. A friend has a 7.62x39 one and all the same applies to it. I would assume the .22 hornet is just as good. A far as reaming to 22khornet it should be fairly straight forward.

I used a Hornet (Ruger #3) extensively when hide hunting coyotes. I think the brass is too fragile for reloading. Rechambering is not a big issue, the case heaspaces on the rim, so the shoulder location is not a big deal. Better get the .223, or if you just want to play with an off the wall cartridge a .221 Fireball is everything the Hornet wishes it was.  ;)

you left out a lot of variables. But heres may opinion If you dont reload a 223 would be much cheaper to shoot. If the noise level is important get a hornet. I own several of both and I grab a hornet way more often because they are so fun and easy to shoot. A hornet is a great 1-200 yard gun, a 223 is good to 300 or so. I personally am a hornet fanatic. except for deer and elk its what I usually shoot. both are wonderful cartridges and CZ's are very well designed and made. you wont go wrong with either. If your son is young a hornet is a great way to start out.

You can download the 223 to be anything from 22LR to 22 Hornet. Do a search for gopher loads.

Thats true I've done it with good results with the 223.I also have a 22 hornet and had a 22 k in a ruger,liked the k but never got that rifle to shoot consistently,more the rifle than the cartridge.
 If doing it all over I would have just went with the 223 remington and been done with it,although had a lot of fun and shot a bunch of groundhogs with the hornet.

Several months ago I was trying to decide bewtween a LH Browning Mico Hunter in 22 Hornet and the LH Hunter in 223.  I went with the 22 Hornet.  I've got a 223 AR-15 to use if I need the added range and I just wanted something different.

I just love this little Hornet, it's a real fun gun to shoot.  If it were to be my only 22 centerfire I'd have picked the 223, for the versatility.

  I know a fellow who lives in AK and his go to rifle for everything is a M77 in .223. He has one of the old synthetic stocks and he says he loves it. I don't think I'd want to tackle a big brown with it but as long as it doesn't have teeth and bite I guess it would be OK.
   I'd have to go with the .223 myself if for nothing but the avalibility of cheap ammo even if you do reload.

I have owned the Hornet, K-Hornet, 221 Fireball presently and 223.  To be honest the Fireball is what the Hornet should have been.  The 223 can be loadedto any lower level you want with 5744 powder and will be accurate to boot.  What's to choose!

I've owned all except the 221 Fireball,had one ordered and gunshop went under before it came in.A question abut the 5744 powder as I have never tried it.In the 223 what is starting charge and velocity?Is it pretty clean burning?I"ve been using shotgun powders in reduced loads and just wondered if this may be better.

Don't over look the .221 Fireball. I have it in CZ527 American and it is a pleasure to shoot and is a true tack driver. The Hornet if K'd does not cycle well and it is finicky to reload for. The .221 has no problems and can kill groundhogs out to 200 yards.
