Rem 7 and 700
« on: September 22, 2006, 09:25:29 AM »
What's the difference between the Remington 700 and 7 actions?  I was on Wal-Mart's web site this morning looking at the selection of Remingtons (no lefty Remingtons available) and was surprised that with similarly stocked rifles, many of the model 7's were pricier than the 700's.

Don't know for sure.  The model 7's are supposed to be a premium rifle. The action is shorter.  Think of them as a short CDL.  Thus they would be higher priced than say a ADL.

I don't think the action is shorter on a model 7, or they would not accept the chamberings that they offer. They chamber them in .308, .7mm-08, .243, and .260, which are shorter cartridges, but still chambered std on the 700 short action, which is the same action used in the model 7.
The main difference in the 700 and the 7 is that the 7 was introduced as a light fast handling carbine type, that would compete in size and weight with lever guns, yet provide the same strong action and great calibers of the 700 short action.

Yes the Model 7 action definitely IS shorter than the SA Model 700. Not a LOT shorter but shorter nonetheless. On the old ones there wasn't even a fourth hole for the base but on the newer ones there is. That's really the only difference action wise is the tiny bit of length difference.

The  model 7 is shorter than the SA model 700 by alittle over 1/2" if you measure the bolts.

I've recently owned both and my 700 is more accurate.  I can't speak for all of them, but if accuracy is the goal I'd get a Model 700.  I really liked the stock on the Stainless Model 7 I owned.  It was not the flimisy plastic stock found on most Remingtons.

The older Model 7 had an 18-1/2" barrel. The newer ones have a 20" barrel.
I've owned and hunted with a .308 Model 7 for about 12 years and really like the rifle.
