Hearing protection while hunting
« on: September 21, 2006, 09:08:47 AM »
Just had a check up a few days ago and the doc said I didn't have as good of hearing in my left ear as I do in my right. Makes sense since I shoot right handed and therefore my  left ear is closer to the muzzle. Now I do wear hearing protection at the range but never in the field. Anybody have any experience with different hearing protection like the Walker Game Ears...or maybe a directional muff?

I am only 34 years old so I figure I have a lot of years left of hunting so I'm thinking I'd better look into something that will help me in the long run.

Only suggestion I can give is, when hunting, why don't you wear one of those ear plugers (dunno thier name) they are little orange thingys, you could buy em from walmart.  Use those in the field for the left ear only so that you can keep your right ear open and still hear the sounds of the wilderness

Thanks quickdtoo for the link!

I was looking at the Walker's Quad Muffs....but also was hoping to hear from somebody who has used the Walker's Game Ears. They are more money when you buy two but they may be a little easier to use in the field.

I had a pair of Walker's, they may be ok with custom ear buds, but the buds that come with them are cheap, don't fit well and are uncomfortable after wearing them for a while. The over the ear thing didn't work well with my eye glasses and are exposed to weather if you just wear a baseball cap, they were kind of a pain to put on, the in ear type are much easier to put on for me.

I bought a pair of Sportears on Ebay for $310 and they work excellent, I've been real happy with them. Got a nice gobbler last year that I wouldn't have known was around if I hadn't barely heard him with the Sportears, would never have heard him without it, he was way down the canyon, took him 35 minutes loooong to get to up me. ;D
