First new hunting rifle
« on: September 20, 2006, 06:31:00 PM »
After 40 years of owning and shooting almost nothing but antique lever guns and single shots, I broke down and bought my first new bolt action rifle. Looked at a lot of different guns, and decided on the Remington 700 VSF. I had already decided on a .22-250 as I owned that caliber before and had everything needed to get started loading and shooting.
Took the 700VSF out to the range tonight and was pleasantly surprised by very nice groups, even with stormy conditions. Hopefully they will tighten up even more once I figure out which trigger screws to adjust, and work up the ideal load for the 700.
The HS Precision stock that Rem. ships these with is very nice, and a good fit for me. I love the aluminum bedding block, which makes it extremely ridgid without adding a lot of weight. The fluted 26" heavy varmint barrel is fully floated, and that's different than my old Rem, which utilized a pressure point at the end of the forearm. I pulled my scope and bipod off my old Rem. and it bolted right up, so it's nice to know they didn't change that setup after over 35 years!

marlinman93, that sure is a sweet set up you got there. I'm thinking about getting a VLS or a VSF myself. Another thing I'm thinking about doing is sending my 700 BDL in 223 Rem. to Hart Rifle Barrels and have them put a custom barrel on it. I still don't know what I want to do. I'd stick with the 223 Rem. though. Again, nice rig you got there!

Very nice.  Now make sure that when you get exited you remember to chamber with the bolt and not reach down for a lever :)

Adjusting the remmy trigger is easy..however I couldn't get mine to be constant, so I bought a timney there set at 3# but you can adjust it from  2# to 4#..ifn your interested in one the best price I could find was at midwayUSA..theres also jewell triggers..the timney will set you back around $85.00 where the jewell is $200.00....still there much better then the factory trigger...

Thanks guys! And thanks for the info on the triggers too! I'll check Brownells, as I get a discount there, and maybe get the Timney a bit less there.
