A couple more things.
Mossberg has expanded the ATR line to include a hard wood stock version. Its currently offered only in the short action (according to their 2006 catalog), which includes only two calibers: .243 & .308. My local dealer is attempting to find me one in a .308.
Also, I recently saw the synthetic woodtone ATR at a Gander Mountain. As much as I like the ATR, I can't say they did the line any favors. The woodtone looks like cheap plastic. It has a walnut style grain, but looks like contact paper. Its very smooth, not textured like the black stock, which added to the plastic look and feel. The seam where the two pieces of the stock are molded together is highlighted more so than the black stock. The recoil pad fit worse than I've seen on any rifle in a long time (Mossberg or any brand). It was oversized and looked to be crooked (the recoil pad may or may not be a product of this particular stock). I also noticed what appeared to be stress marks at curved areas such as the cheek piece and hand grip. It truly looks like a stock you might find on a toy rifle.
My guess is that Mossberg has an uphill climb competing with the Stevens 200, but again, they didn't do themselves any favors with this one. Their efforts and expense may have been better served expanding their line of calibers to include the .223; .22-250; .25-06; 7mm-08, just to name a few.
Just being honest.
Thanks
