Question on Mauser bolt action 7.65x53
« on: September 20, 2006, 07:22:47 AM »
My uncle has a 7.65x53 Argentine mauser he wants to sell.  Asking 500.  it's a nice gun, has a cheap simmons 4-14x scope, and shoots well.  is it worth 500?

Well if it's a full blown Model 1909 custom, $500 wouldn't be a bad price, but on of the '95s would have to be a museum piece to be worth that.  ;)

Like Slamfire said it depends. I have several Argentines. Original military 95's and 09's and converted 09's. Do not pick a 95 for general shooting or hunting they are not as strong but mainly because they are cock on closing and this would take some getting used to. The rifle in the picture is a 95 action converted to a sporter. The converted 09 I hace started as an Interarms conversion to 30-06. The rifle wouldn't shoot worth a damn because Interarms had retained the original military barrel and rechambered to 30-06. Well, that was a .312 bore and standard 30 cal is .308 too much difference. Rebarreled, changed stocks, glass bedded, etc. The rifle shoots great!! But I did this, it would not be cost effective if you couldn't do this yourself. For $500 you pick up any Rem 700 or Win, Savage, etc, in a caliber you wanted. Basically, the time for Mauser conversions has passed. Charles Daly sells new 98 actions that you could have a custom rifle built if you want. A lot of people like the controlled feeding feature of the Mausers for building dangerous game rifles.

You fellers have you're models confused. The rifle pictured is a M1891 DWM Modello Aregnteno made in 1900. But even if it were a model 09 it wouldn't be worth $500 unless it had a $300 piece of wood on it.

BTW even with the .312 bore this rifle shoots .308 dia bullets great

Krochus, you are absolutely correct!!!!! Pardon my lapse in memory. The Interarms I had would not shoot 3" groups are not acceptable. I rebarreld with an original 09 military barrel that I cut to 24" and crowned. My military rifles in 91 and 09 with iron sights shot better than the Interarms conversion. I have both a 91 Cavalry carbine and and 09 Engineers carbine in 100% correct issue with correct bayonnets and scabards. I believe you would be hard pressed to buy one for $500 today. I personally would not have a problem shooting the rifle in the pic (I like it) with my handloads. In the 09 rifle I converted I can get (chrono true) 2800 fps with 150 gr Hornady .312, right in 308 Win performance. Not bad from an over 100 year old cartridge design.

I didn't mention the '91 as I don't consider them suitable for anything but mantle decorations. I know that is what the picture was of, though. The Mannlicher style magazine is a sure tip off. I did err on the 93/95 id though.  :P
