673 Guide gun

Had an opportunity to handle a Remington Model 673 Guide gun this morning.  I like the look and feel of the gun and also the .350 Rem Mag cartridge (this one was in .300 Rem SAUM).  It's ashame it doesn't come in a lefty version.  I was curious, is the 673 rifle a 700 action with a vent rib on the barrel and put in a laminate stock, or did they come up with a new action for this rifle?  Was the older 600 rifle it's based on a new action?

The 673 is derived from the wonderful little  Model 7 action. It sports a heavier contour barrel and in 22" length. It replicates the 600 Magnum of the 60's and early 70's. Yes they are nice and I wish they too came in a left bolt sporting a right-handed thumbhole stock of same laminated wood.

I understand that you will still have to spin the rear sight around if you want to mount a scope on it, just like the 600 and 660.  Some things never change.

I have handled the new Rem Guide Guns, but have never shot one. I know a lot of people don't like the ribs, but I think it's a good looking rifle. I recently got a Ruger M77 in 350 Rem Mag, and it's a great shooting gun. The 350 was the original 'short magnum'. It will be my main rifle this season.

I similarly have held this gun at the gun store, but I have never shot it.  I think that it is well balanced, but I really don't like the design of it.

If it didn't have the vent rib I'd probably get one. I really don't need a 350 Rem. mag. but what the heck, I've held a few 673's and like the way they feel. I love the laminated stock.......just can't get past the vent rib.

When Remington made those 600's and 660's all the guys did was complain that the barrel wasn't long enough for the Magnum calibers.  The Remington 6.5mm Mag and 350 Mag rifles in those Models demand one of the highest premiums now on the auction websites.  Not bad for a gun nobody wanted and dispised the looks of.

After listening to all of the belly-aching for a few years Remington decided to make them again in a longer barrel.  Hence the 673.  They were ugly back then, and they are just as ugly now.  The Magnum calibers almosr demand a longer barrel to be effective.

If you live long enough to realize the profit, those Guide Guns will one day demand one of the highest premiums once again.  Only this time it will be different calibers with the most worth.   I hope they come out with a 6.5 Mag in the 673.  I'll jump on that one in a New York second.

well get ready to jump because they did come out with the 673 in the 6.5 rem mag a couple years back. I don't know how available they are now but I've seen a couple in the past year or so. I have one in the 350 and love it. Personnally I think it's a great looking rifle and it handles great. I didn't have to touch the sights when putting a scope on it but it was a fullfield II 1.75-5 so maybe that had something to do with it. I've shot 225 gr Partition reloads thru it and have gotten 1" 3 shot groups consistently. Great gun but I don't think it's going to last judging from the dealer magazine I just looked through.

How many years has the 673 been in Production?  I was under the impression that the 673 is a more recent offer.

Either way, if it goes out of production, there will be alot of clammering in years to come, trying to find them cheap.  Which WILL NOT happen.
