Those new lazer sighters are supposed to work well. Myself, I neveer use a bore sighter. I mount the new scope then set a target up at about 12 yds. Look thru the bore and be sure the bullet will hit the paper. Then fire one shot. Have someone help you here; get the same sight picture again and have a friend move the crosshairs to the bullet hole while you haod the rifle steady. Fire one more shot, it should be right where you aimed. Now move to 100yds and sight it in. Works every time!

I picked up a Bushnell magnetic boresighter on sale last year.  Afraid I can't figure out its value.  It attaches to the muzzle by a magnet.  You're free to slide it up or down, left or right.  I put a straight edge along the top of the scope and do my best to line up the top of the boresighter with the straight edge.  As far as lateral movement goes, I do my best to eyeball that it's straight up and down and not canted to the left or right.  With all the inexactness in the above procedure I've described, I'm not sure it's any better than removing the bolt and sighting down the bore.

Having said that, I must also admit that the last 2 rifles I sighted in were on paper at the range after using the boresighter.  But I was disappointed in its lack of precision.  But it was less than half the price of a cartridge laser boresighter.  Probably less than a third the cost when you add in the cartridge sleeve if you're using it on something other than .223 Rem.

I agree with Omaha. Don't waste your money on toys.

Just sighted in a new Conquest last week. Great Scope, btw.  ;)

1. Set up a target at 25yds.
2. Look through the bore at the bullseye. With the rifle in the same position, adjust the crosshairs. Adjust a little above bull, get windage as close as possible and fire a shot.
3. You should be on paper. Take the target to 100 and commence final sighting in. Try to obtain perfect windage. Adjust elevation according to anticipated shooting distance. I like to be ~ 3" above bull at 100.

Regards

I agree too.

I have bore sighted many scopes with my naked eye and they have ALL hit paper at 100 yards.  Heck, on many jobs I got to within about 8" of the bullseye - that's pretty good.

I'll never forget the BEST "naked eye" bore sight job I did....it was about 1" high, but otherwise exactly in the middle of the target!
