But why do you/don't you, carry a knife??
« on: April 11, 2003, 01:39:02 PM »
I don't go anywhere without at LEAST a stout folding knife, sharp as I can have it.  So very few people carry some type of tool that can be used for self defense...why not?   I joke about some of my carry knives being "coupon cutters", but my real intent is the mindset to prevail if need be, over a dangerous adversary.  Do people just not think that there are violent people out in the world?  Or are they willing to just let the bully or robber have their way, injuring, robbing or killing who ever they want?  How do you feel?  If you carry a gun for self defense, obviously you are covered here, but how do you feel? Would you really use that tool you carry>? :D

Yes, that's my point, if you never need it, great, but what are you going to do if you do?  People are basically good in my opinion, but anything I can do to keep from being a victim, so much the better. :D

The only place  that I go without a Benchmade in my pocket is on an airplane and before 911 it went with me there too.  By the way, I also carry an M9 Berretta a lot of the time for work, but there is always the Benchmade with me!!

I know what you mean about carrying one on an airplane. I dont fly a lot but the last trip I made before 911, I was better armed than the hijackers were on 911. Then on my visit to D.C. in August in 2001, being a dumb country boy from GA, I never new that you could carry a knife thats "to big" until a security guard would not let me in one building until I took my 4" Cold Steel back to the car. (At least he didn't confiscate it.) He let me in with the 3" one though. I did get some strange looks from them because I had both knives on me at the same time. Go figure!

I carry my Cold Steel Gunsite II with tanto blade everywhere I go. It's a tool for cutting twine, opening boxes, etc. It can also be applied to more serious work like self defense. RKBA!

That's right, and you carry both styles...the muskrat trapper to give to the wife to open UPS packages, and the "social one"  to keep you coming home at night...

"long as you are mentioning specific folders, the Timberline Worden folders, and the CRKT  Model Seven will  do the trick too.  I carry the Dervish knives Ishtar or my RJ Martin 5 inch Kwaiken...to quote a quote:  "And a country boy can survive..."   Stay safe! :D

Don't figure I've finished dressing until I put a folder in my pocket. If I got my pants on I've got a knife with me. Been toting one everywhere since I was a wee lad perhaps 50 years or so ago. Been toting a handgun concealed every since I turned 21 also. Don't matter what room of the house I'm in either I have a loaded gun within reach of me at all times. Ya never know when you'll need it and if you need it you NEED IT REAL BADLY.

Buck "Duke" with a one arm bandit and a Cold Steel "Vaquero Grande" in the waistband. -Modern "Navajas"

The ones above replaced to well used Exposito folders of comparable size, with the 6" bladed folder in a custom scabbard.

My Benchmade Nimavarus on my belt nect to my holster.  My Gerber Pocket tool is on the other side of my belt.  One thing that I have learned in the Army is to be prepared for the worst.  I have never had to resort to my Glock, but my knife and my pocket tool have served me an insurmountable amount of times.

I have a Cold Steel Voyager with a 4" blade. It was given to me by a friend. It works like a dream. The only problem I had was the pocket clip broke off. I know a few other people with similar knives, two in particular with cold steel knives. Everyone has had a pocket clip break, and the two guys with cold steels both went thru two pocket clips. I figured I could do better and make a clip for my own knife that wouldn't break. I made it out of aluminum, polished it, and put it on, and haven't had a problem since.
Its a bit large for the everyday boxcutting and other stuff that you "Shouldnt use a knife for", but it would be nice to have the size of it in case I would have to use it to defend myself.

It's true, more and more people are "carrying" in the hopes that they never have to use a weapon.  The recognition of a "change" in the cities in which we live, that would cause us to carry weapons is sad, but to me that is more comforting than someone who fails to heed danger signs.   The trick obviously is to behave so as not to be found out by law enforcement, and "fly under the radar" until the time comes for a confrontation. :D

I didn't start carrying a knife for protection until Aug. 2000. I was in Germany and was taking a walk off base everyday. One morning as I went out the gate the security police guard warned me of a dog attack along the trail the day before. I bought a Gerber Covert Folder that day. I hadn't thought of carrying a knife until then since I have a CCW permit. The dog attack was caused by an officer that did a stupid thing. He was jogging past a 60 year old local man that was walking the dog and didn't move over away from him.  You can't blame a dog for being protective if you're stupid.  Dave

Why I carry a knife.
« Reply #15 on: August 26, 2003, 01:15:18 PM »
Why do I carry a knife?  Because in the past, it always seems one is needed when I don't have one.  As far as a defensive application, if you're aware of your surroundings than you'll probably find at least half a dozen more effective (free) defensive tools than your $80 3-3/4" tactical folder.  I.E. mop handles, heavy lamps, chairs, etc...  But that's no reason to not carry a knife.  If there's a dog attacking a child and I have to use my knife to save the child (happens more often than you'd think) I'll sure be happy I carried the knife.  If I gotta cut someone's seatbelt to pull them from a car wreck, I'll be happy too.

If all you have is a hammer, every problem looks like a nail.
If all you carry is a pistol, every incident looks like a shooting situation.

I carry a pistol where I can.
I carry 2 Spyderco Delicas, left and right.
I carry pepperspray in my support hand.
I have a ballpoint pen in my shirt pocket.
All except the spray can be lethal weapons.
They fit into an escalation of force plan.
I also carry a cel phone and tactical flashlight.
If you get hassled and cornered by an aggressive panhandler some night,
would you shoot him, spray him, or temporarily flash blind him?

I highly recommend integrated training as offered by
www.insightstraining.com in Western Washington.
And, no, I have no financial interest, merely a satisfied student.

Knives, pens, lights, and phones are also convenient non-defensive tools.

I carry a pistol for defense almost all of the time...but just a few inches away is a nice folder in my pocket.  Before I was of age to get a CCW I only had knives so they were for defense.  Now along with the gun and folder I carry a sog multitool, cell phone and a surefire light.

Kind of funny that you mention this...On Monday coming to work a Jeep rolled over into the ditch at the side of the interstate.  I ran down to the upside down Jeep while talking to 911.  The woman was okay but stuck in the truck.  I had to crawl half way in and cut the seat belt.  Once it was cut I pulled her out and she was fine...pretty shook up and a bit bumped and bruised but over all okay.  Just one more reason that I carry it!

The thought of not carrying my knives never occured to me. I have at least two all the time. During the winter months I have 3. I get cardboard from the stores and use one knife to "knock" the boxes down flat to get more boxes into the car. One knife is strickly for cutting burgers and food. The other one is a sort of loaner that I let other people use when the don't have a knife. My Mom says I was born with a knife in each hand. I can't remember a time when I didn't carry a pocketknife.

I was wondering where the S&W S.W.A.T. knife you ordered was made? I have one from S&W called "Cutting Horse". Has a pocket clip and is a one hand opener with the mid-lockback made in China. Half serrated clip type blade. Seems ok? Must be stainless steel? Blade and handle are black. I got it at a store that sells left-over items at reasonable prices.

A long time ago I was working with an oldtimer doing construction.  One day he asked to borrow my pocket knife.  When I told him I didn't have one, he looked crossways at me and said "He** boy, you might as well squat to pee".  Ever since then, I've always carried a pocket knife.  Nowadays,  it's a spyderco clipit.  I've carried one of these for the last 15 years or so.  Most of my pants show wear on the edge of the pocket from the clip.  If'n I've got on something with a beltline, I've got my knife with me.   The only exception is if I'm flying on an airliner somewhere.

I just bought a nice "KERSHAW" it says I'm guessing it's a Ken Onion design. It is a blade assist opening knife, and she opens fast, must have a spring in the handle. It is just as fast as a switchblade, but she has to be legal, I got her at Wal-Mart for $45.00. I carry a blade with me at all times, (was a BOY SCOUT, always be prepared) you never know.
