460 base and rings
« on: September 12, 2006, 08:24:03 AM »
I have the basic 8 3/8 barrel model and I plan on putting a scope on it.  Looking at many different shooting mags. and talking to others on other fourms that warne bases and rings are what they are going with.  Has anyone taken the scope off and used the iron sights on this base? On the smith and wesson site they have warne bases and then another made all in stainless steel if I am correct.  The price for the base and rings are $172.  Anyone seen this?  Have this set-up on their 460?  I want to hear as much info as possible.  I feel your base and rings should be just as good as the scope.  I don't want to get hit in the head with a scope flying backwards ;D  I plan on putting a 2x-6 on it.  Anyone have pics on their 460 would be sweet, thanks everyone!

I read a few posts about the weigand base and rings and they were good.  I think I will go with that and save myself a few bucks.  The other bases I have looked at have the iron sights on the base and I don't think I will ever take the scope off to use the iron sights if it is scoped.  For the people that have picked up this base did you buy three or four rings for the base?

that was the base I was thinking about getting ;D  I decided to go with the weigand because I know I will not take my scope off.  I am using this 460 for hunting and that is just about it. So to me spending the extra $ for the sights and quick detach don't add up to me.  I know warne make good stuff, but their setup is not 100% of what I am looking for.   How many rounds have you fired with your scope setup?

I'm pretty sure that Warne Base is the same base I have on my S&W 500. Where as if your scope mess's up you could take it off and use the sights that are built in the base.

No I haven't used those sights. If it the same as mine its a steel base.

I went out with my weigand base with four of their rings this weekend.  I put a bushnell trophy 2x-6 on it and everything went well.  I shot about 15rounds threw it and I didn't have a scope and base fly off or pick up pieces of a scope ;D  I did my shooting about 30 yards away and I had a nice grouping.  Next time I will plan on shooting at about 50 yards and see how we do.

That Trophy Bushnell 2x6 scope should be a good scope I have one on my 44 Mag 14 barrel Contender. I have shot some heavy loads and it stll works like new. I know the 460 has more power tho.

I have a Bushnell Trophy 2X6  that I use on one of my 460 Mags also. Great scope and holds up well.

What do you guys use as a rest to sight your monsters in?  I have a steel rest that I can move up or down.  I picked up a new leather velcro piece for the top.  I put the x-frame as far forward as possible and after one shot the flash ripped the leather open >:(  Felt a  little stupid when that happened. I then put a towel over top of it, and it ripped a hole in that also >:(  I was thinking about sand bags and at the top put a piece of rolled up carpet or something else.  Thanks for the help!

I use leather sand bags, I put the yoke of the frame on the bag. I don't put the barrel on the bag and I keep the cylinder higher than the bag.

I use sand bags covered with blue jean material. on top of a 4x4. I rest the barrel on the sandbag on the 4x4 and use another sandbag under the stock of the revolver. Make sure that the barrel is out past the sandbag before fireing. I have had to replace the bule jean cover if I did alot of shooting. Just to fire off 10 to 15 rounds it was ok.

Went shooting with my 460 with the weigold base and rings.  I had three 1/2 inch groupings at 50 yards.  Very happy.  I am confident now taking it out with me opening deer season. When I figure out how to post my pictures I will of the grouping.  I am also happy because it was with the reloads ;D  Thanks everyone for your comments!
